What Viscotears and what are used for

Viscotear’s eye gel replaces the tear fluid in cases of dry eyes. Viscotear’s eye gel moisturizes the eyes and forms a protective film, which can remain for up to 6 hours.

Note that the doctor may have prescribed the medicine for a different area of ​​use and/or a different dosage than stated in the package insert.

Carbomer contained in Viscotears may also be approved to treat other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

Before using Viscotears 

Do not use Viscotears

  • if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to carbomer or any of the other ingredients in Viscotears.

Always follow the doctor’s prescription and the instructions on the pharmacy label, even if they differ from the information given in this leaflet.

Be especially careful with Viscotears

  • if you wear contact lenses, they should be removed before using Viscotears and not reinserted until after 30 minutes at the earliest. The preservative cetrimide can discolor soft contact lenses.

Children and young people under the age of 18

Clinical experience shows safety and efficacy in children and adolescents at the same use and dosage of Viscotears as in adults, but there are no results from clinical trials.

Use of other medicines

If you use other eye medicines at the same time as Viscotears, you should wait 5 minutes between each treatment. Viscotears are always dropped into the eye as the last medicine.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including those obtained without a prescription.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

Driving ability and use of machinery

If you get a blurred vision in connection with the use of Viscotear’s eye gel, you should not drive a car or use machines immediately after you have dropped the eye gel in your eyes.

How to use Viscotears

Always use Viscotears as directed by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The usual dose is 1 drop in the eye 3-4 times daily or as needed.

Children and young people under the age of 18

Instructions for use:

Wash your hands. Pull down the lower eyelid with a finger. Tilt your head back and hold the tube of eye gel vertically with the tip down in your other hand. Squeeze a drop of gel from the tube and dose the gel into the conjunctival sac between the eye and the lower eyelid. Avoid touching the eye with the tip of the tube.

Instructions for use

The tube of eye gel should be closed immediately after use.

Avoid touching any surface, including the eye, with the tip of the tube as this may cause damage to the eye and contaminate the gel.

If you forget to use Viscotears

If you have forgotten to use Viscotears, apply the eye gel as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Viscotears can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Eyes:

Common (affects more than 1 user in 100): Mild temporary eye irritation, sticky eyelids, and blurred vision.

The following side effects have been reported (no known frequency): Hypersensitivity, bloodshot eyes, swelling of the outer surface of the eye (conjunctiva), swollen eyelids, and itching and pain in the eyes.

How to store Viscotears

Store out of sight and reach of children.

Store the tube vertically, with the tip down.

An opened tube is useful for 4 weeks for single-patient use and 1 week for multiple-patient uses.

Use before the expiry date stated on the carton.

The medicine must not be thrown into the drain or among the household waste. Ask the pharmacist how to deal with medicines that are no longer used. These measures will help to protect the environment.
