What Vi-Siblin is and what it is used for

Vi-Siblin is a volume-increasing fiber preparation (bulking agent) that normalizes stool and helps with both sluggish and loose stomachs. Vi-Siblin contains a plant mucilage that binds water, thereby increasing the volume of the intestinal contents so that intestinal function is normalized.

Ispaghula seed husk contained in Vi-Siblin may also be approved to treat other conditions not mentioned in this leaflet. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

What you need to know before using Vi-Siblin

  • if you are allergic to the active substance or any other ingredient in this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • in case of passage obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract

Driving ability and use of machinery

Vi-Siblin does not affect the ability to drive or use machines.

You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires increased attention. One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and/or side effects. A description of these effects and side effects can be found in other sections. Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Vi-Siblin contains sucrose and sodium chloride

  • This medicine contains 2.28 g of sucrose per measuring unit/dosage bag. If you have an intolerance to some sugars, you should consult your doctor before taking this medicine. If you use 3 dose measures/dose bags per day, the total daily amount of sucrose is 6.84 g, which should be taken into account in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • This medicine contains 33 mg of sodium (the main ingredient in common/table salt) per measuring unit/dose bag. This corresponds to 1.65% of the maximum recommended daily intake of sodium for adults.

How to use Vi-Siblin

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Treatment begins with one dose per day. The dosage is then gradually increased until the stomach functions satisfactorily (usually takes about 3-7 days). People with an extra sensitive stomach should gradually increase over 1-2 weeks.

Recommended maintenance dose:

Adults: 1 measuring cup or 1 sachet (approx. 6 g Vi-Siblin) 2-3 times daily.

Children over 6 years: 1 dose measure or 1 sachet 2 times daily.

Children 2-6 years: 1/2 dose measure or 1/2 dose bag 2 times daily.

Do not use it for children under 2 years of age without a doctor’s prescription. Another dose according to doctor’s prescription.

Vi-Siblin should be taken with a glass of liquid.

Vi-Siblin can be mixed into water, milk, juice, or other drinks. Vi-Siblin can also be sprinkled on or mixed into food, e.g. cottage cheese, porridge, or minced meat sauce. Regardless of how you take Vi-Siblin, always drink a glass of liquid at the same time.

For granules, use the attached dosage measure.

If you forget to use Vi-Siblin

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Bulking agents can cause temporary stomach discomfort at the beginning of treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): Stomach cramps and increased flatulence.

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1000 users): Allergic reactions e.g. hay fever, skin rash, runny nose, and conjunctivitis. These reactions mainly affect people who work extensively with preparations containing the active substance in Vi-Siblin.

How to store Vi-Siblin

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Use before the expiry date stated on the packaging. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines must not be thrown into the drain or among the household waste. Ask the pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer used. These measures will help to protect the environment.
