What Strepsils Ginger and what it is used for

Strepsils Ingefära is a throat tablet that is used for mild infections in the oral cavity and pharynx, for example for a sore throat. Strepsils Ginger has an antibacterial and antiviral effect.

The 2,4-dichlorobenzene alcohol / amyl meta cresol found in Strepsils Ginger may also be approved to treat other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

What you need to know before taking Strepsils Ginger

Do not use Strepsils Ginger

  • if you are allergic to 2,4-dichlorobenzene alcohol, amylmetacresol, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions

Do not exceed the recommended dose.

The lozenge should not be given to small children as it may pose a risk of suffocation.

You should contact a doctor in case of persistent symptoms or high fever.

Children

Strepsils Ginger is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

Other medicines and Strepsils Ginger

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy

Information on Strepsils Ginger during pregnancy is missing.

Breast-feeding

Not known if Strepsils Ginger passes into breast milk. A risk to the newborn child/infant cannot be excluded.

Driving ability and use of machinery

Strepsils Ginger has no effects on the ability to drive and use machines.

Strepsils Ginger contains glucose, sucrose, wheat starch (gluten), sodium, sulfur dioxide (E 220), and flavorings

If you have an intolerance to certain sugars, you should consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Contains 1.10 g anhydrous glucose and 1.38 g sucrose per lozenge. This should be taken into account by patients with diabetes mellitus.

This medicine contains only very low levels of gluten (from wheat starch included in glucose ) and is considered “gluten-free”. It is very unlikely to cause problems if you have gluten intolerance ( celiac disease ).

One lozenge contains no more than 22.04 micrograms of gluten.

If you are allergic to wheat (a disease other than gluten intolerance) you should not use this medicine.

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per dose, i.e. it is almost “sodium-free”.

This medicine contains 0.141 ppm sulfur dioxide (E 220) (which is included in glucose ) per lozenge, which in rare cases can cause serious hypersensitivity reactions and spasms in the airways.

This medicine contains flavors with citral, cinnamaldehyde, citronellol, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, isoeugenol, and linalool.

Citral, cinnamaldehyde, citronellol, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, isoeugenol, and linalool can cause allergic reactions.

How to take Strepsils Ginger

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The recommended dose is:

Adults and children from 6 years of age: If necessary, a lozenge can be slowly dissolved in the mouth every two to three hours. The maximum recommended daily dose is 12 lozenges. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Use the lowest dose and the shortest possible duration of treatment needed to relieve symptoms.

You should contact a doctor in case of persistent symptoms or high fever.

If you have taken too much Strepsils Ginger

Possible reactions in case of overdose are gastrointestinal discomfort. If you have ingested too much medicine or if, for example, a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for an assessment of the risk and advice.

If you forget to take Strepsils Ginger

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten lozenge

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Stop taking Strepsils Ginger and immediately contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • swelling of the face, tongue, or throat,
  • difficulty swallowing,
  • hives and difficulty breathing.

This may be a sign of hypersensitivity reaction such as angioedema which has been reported in an unknown number of users.

Other side effects that may occur.

  • Abdominal pain, nausea, and discomfort in the mouth. Rash.

How Strepsils Ginger should be stored

Store at a maximum of 25ºC.

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Use before the expiry date stated on the packaging. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines must not be thrown into the drain or among the household waste. Ask the pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer used. These measures will help to protect the environment.

Contents declaration

  • The active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzene alcohol, and amyl meta cresol. One lozenge contains 2,4-dichlorobenzene alcohol 1.2 mg, amyl meta cresol 0.6 mg.
  • Other ingredients are sucrose, anhydrous glucose, tartaric acid (E 334), anthocyanins (E 163), medium-chain triglycerides , and flavors (plum flavor, ginger flavor, wasabi flavor, cream flavor).

Appearance and package sizes of the medicine

The tablets are red, round lozenges with an S engraved on the top and bottom. The diameter is approximately 18 mm.
