What Nipenesin is and what it is used for

Nipenesin is used to relieve cough with viscous mucus.

It contains:

  • guaifenesin (an expectorant) that helps to dissolve mucus from the airways and make it easier to cough up.

The formulation does not cause drowsiness. The drug is intended for adults and adolescents from the age of 12 years. 

2. What you need to know before you take Nipenesin

Do not take Nipenesin if you

  • is allergic to guaifenesin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and cautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Nipenesin if you:

  • have had a cough for more than a week or if the cough recurs or is associated with fever, rash or persistent headache.
  • have persistent cough that may be due to asthma .
  • coughs up large amounts of mucus.
  • have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • ingests alcohol.

Other medicines and Nipenesin

Always tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

You should not take this medicine with other cough medicines that are designed to make you stop coughing (antitussives or antitussives) as they may affect the effects of this medicine.

Some urine tests may be affected if the sample is taken within 24 hours of taking this medicine. Tell the doctor or nurse taking the test that you are taking this medicine. 

Nipenesin with food and drink

You can take this medicine with or without food or drink.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking Nipenesin. Nipenesin is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines

This medicine is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, if you feel sick, do not drive or use machines.

Nipenesin contains:

  • 4.7% by volume of ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 400 mg per dose , equivalent to approximately 10 ml of beer or 4 ml of wine per 10 ml dose . This can be harmful for people suffering from alcoholism. Ethanol content should be considered by pregnant or lactating women, children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy .
  • 41.1 mg sodium (the main ingredient in table salt / table salt) per 10 ml. This corresponds to 2.054% of the highest recommended daily intake of sodium for adults.
  • about 2 g of sucrose and 7 g of glucose per 10 ml. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • This should be considered in patients with diabetes mellitus . Sucrose and glucose can be harmful to the teeth.
  • 20 mg sodium benzoate per 10 ml.
  • 57.7 mg propylene glycol per 10 ml.

How to take Nipenesin

Always take Nipenesin exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

This syrup is for swallowing only.

Do not use more than the indicated dose one.

  • Do not take more than 4 doses (40 ml) per day.
  • You need to talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse within a week.

If you take more Nipenesin than you should

If you have ingested too much medicine or if e.g. If a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice.

If you take too much of this medicine, you may develop kidney stones.

Symptoms can be:

  • Stomach upset, nausea and drowsiness.

If you forget to take Nipenesin

Only take this medicine if necessary and follow the dosing instructions carefully. If you forget to take a dose, take the next dose if necessary. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Do not take more than 4 doses (40 ml) per day.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Nipenesin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

If you notice any of the following, stop taking Nipenesin and see a doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reactions with rash (which can be severe and include blistering and flaking of the skin) and itching .
  • Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat ( anaphylactic reaction ).

Other side effects that have been reported (occurring in an unknown number of users are:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach upset

How to store Nipenesin

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Store in the original package. Sensitive to light. 

Do not use if the bottle seal is broken when buying.

Use before the expiry date which is stated on the bottle and the outer carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Used within 6 months after opening.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.

Content declaration

The active substance is guaifenesin. This product contains 100 mg of guaifenesin in every 5 ml. 

The other ingredients are sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, carbomer, glycerol, ethanol, glucose, sucrose, sucralose, sodium benzoate (E211), caramel (E150), honey flavor, lemon flavor, flavoring with cooling effect, flavoring with cooling effect, flavor enhancer and flavor with masking effect and water.

What the medicine looks like and contents of the pack

Nipenesin is a yellow-brown syrup intended for swallowing only.

The product is sold in 150 ml or 300 ml brown glass bottles fitted with a child-resistant plastic lid.

Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
