What Morphine Special is and what it is used for

Morphine Special contains morphine hydrochloride which has a strong analgesic effect.

Morphine Special is used as pain relief after surgery and for external injuries. Also used for chronic pain e.g. in connection with cancer.

Morphine hydrochloride contained in Morphine Special may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

What you need to know before using Morphine Special

Do not use Morphine Special

  • in conditions with a lot of mucus in the airways
  • in case of impaired respiratory function
  • in case of anxiety caused by alcohol or sleeping pills
  • if you are allergic to morphine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and cautions

There is a risk of addiction with Morphine Special.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before using Morphine Special

  • if you are taking any addictive drugs (eg opioids )
  • in asthma
  • in case of head injury
  • in case of impaired liver or kidney function
  • during concomitant treatment with MAO inhibitors (antidepressants)

Treatment of elderly patients should be done with caution and a lower starting dose is recommended.

Other drugs and Morphine Special

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

The effect of the treatment can be affected if Morphine Special is taken at the same time as certain other medicines.

Morphine Special may impair respiratory function during concomitant treatment with:

  • barbiturates (remedies for insomnia, anxiety and epilepsy ). The combination should be avoided.
  • MAO inhibitors (antidepressants)

The effect of Morphine Special is enhanced by:

  • clomipramine, amitriptyline (antidepressant)
  • MAO inhibitors (antidepressants)

The effect of Morphine Special decreases with:

  • buprenorphine, nalbufine, pentazocine (analgesics)

Dose one of Morphine Special may need to be increased during concomitant treatment with:

  • rifampicin ( antibiotic for tuberculosis )

Morphine Special with food, drink and alcohol

Combination with alcohol should be avoided as respiratory function may be impaired.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy

If Morphine Special is used for a long time during pregnancy, the newborn baby may have withdrawal symptoms. The use of morphine during childbirth may cause the newborn to have impaired respiratory function. Talk to your doctor before using Morphine Special during pregnancy.

Breast-feeding

Morphine passes into breast milk. Morphine Special should therefore not be used during breastfeeding without first discussing it with a doctor.

Driving and using machines

During treatment with Morphine Special, the ability to react may be reduced. This should be taken into account when sharper attention is required, eg when driving a car.

You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention. One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and/or side effects. Descriptions of these effects and side effects can be found in other sections. Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How to use Morphine Special

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Dose one is individual and determined by a doctor. Some monitoring may take place.

If you use more Morphine Special than you should 

Symptoms of overdose include: decreased consciousness, severe respiratory distress, unnaturally small pupils, pale and moist skin, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes), reflexes stop working, respiratory arrest, unconsciousness, seizures (especially in children ), nausea, vomiting, and constipation.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common (affects more than 1 user in 100): changes in carbon dioxide levels during blood gas measurement, nausea, vomiting, constipation, pruritus, difficulty in emptying the bladder.

Uncommon (less than 1 in 100 people affected, more than 1 in 1000 people affected): Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, impaired respiratory function, confusion.

How to store Morphine Special

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the ampoule after EXP or after EXP. on the outer packaging. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
