What Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma is and what it is used for

Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma is a urinary tract antiseptic (against bacteria) used to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.

Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma is also used in examinations and treatments of the urinary tract to reduce the risk of infection.

Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma is also given to people who carry urinary catheters for a long time.

The prophylactic treatment according to these instructions reduces the risk of new urinary tract infections with recurrent painful vomiting and foul-smelling urine.

Methenamine hippurate contained in Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professionals if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

What you need to know before using Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma

Do not use Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma

  • if you are allergic to methenamine hippurate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
  • If you are hypersensitive to formalin
  • If you have impaired kidney function, are severely dehydrated or have gout
  • If you have impaired liver function
  • If you have so-called metabolic acidosis (high amount of acidic substances in the body that cause increased heart rate, headaches and nausea)
  • If you have a kidney infection

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

It is important to tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • Medicines used for heartburn, as these can reduce the effect of Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma by making your urine less acidic
  • Drugs called sulfonamides , also called “sulfa”, as it can increase the risk of getting crystals in the urine (so-called crystalluria)
    If you are going to take a urine sample, tell your doctor or nurse that you are using Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma, as methenamine hippurate may cause incorrect results for certain substances such as steroids .

Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma can be taken with or without food and drink.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma contains sodium

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per tablet, ie it is essentially ‘sodium-free’.

How to use Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The recommended dose for adults is 1 tablet twice daily. In patients with catheters, the dose may be increased to 1 tablet 3 times daily.

Use for children and adolescents

The recommended dose for children 6-12 years: ½ tablet 2 times daily.

The recommended dose for children older than 12 years: 1 tablet twice daily.

The tablet can be divided into two equal doses.

The tablets can be halved or crushed and taken with water if the patient is unable to swallow whole tablets or other methenamine hippurate preparations may be used if available.

If you use too much Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma  

The most common symptoms of overdose are nausea, vomiting, possibly blood in the urine, dizziness, and tinnitus. Drink plenty of water.

If you forget to use Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma

Continue treatment as prescribed by your doctor, taking your next dose as planned.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): nausea, vomiting, rash, bladder irritation.

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people): blood in the urine

How to store Methenamine hippurate EQL Pharma

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Store in the original package. Moisture sensitive.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton or bottle after EXP. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
