What is Locacorten-Vioform and what is it used for?

Locacorten-Vioform contains the active substances flumethasone pivalate and clioquinol.

It is a medium-strength cortisone preparation for bacterial and fungal-infected inflammation, such as eczema in the ear canal.

Flumethasone in Locacorten-Vioform is a moderate glucocorticoid .

Clioquinol is an antiseptic.

Flumethasone relieves itching and redness of the skin in connection with inflammation and clioquinol prevents the growth of several different bacteria and fungi.

Do not use Locacorten-Vioform

  • if you are allergic to flumethasone pivalate, clioquinol, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
  • if you are allergic to hydroxyquinolines, other quinolone derivatives or iodine
  • if you have or suspect you may have a hole in the eardrum
  • to children under 2 years
  • ear infections caused by viruses , tuberculosis or syphilis

What you need to know before using Locacorten-Vioform

Warnings and cautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Locacorten-Bioform.

Before treatment, the eardrum should be checked by a doctor. Locacorten-Vioform should not be used if there is a risk of rupture of the eardrum.

Locacorten-Vioform must not come into contact with eyes or mucous membranes as they irritate them.

Contact a doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.

Some yellowing of the skin, hair, and clothes may occur.

Children and young people

Locacorten-Vioform should not be given to children under 2 years of age.

Other medicines and Locacorten-Vioform

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

Locacorten-Vioform should not be used concomitantly with other preparations containing heavy metals such as ointments containing zinc, as colored chemical compounds may then be formed.

Some medicines may increase the effects of Locacorten-Vioform and your doctor may want to monitor you closely if you are taking these medicines (eg some medicines for HIV: ritonavir, cobicistat).

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy

Ask your doctor before using Locacorten-Bioform. It is not known if the drug can affect the fetus. Your doctor will decide if you should use Locacorten-Vioform or not.

Breast-feeding

If you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using Locacorten-Bioform. It is not known if the medicine passes into breast milk, and your doctor will decide if you should use Locacorten-Vioform or not.

Driving and using machines

No known effect.

How to use Locacorten-Vioform

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

The recommended dose is 2-3 drops into the ear canal once, twice daily, if necessary more often.

While applying the ear drops, and a few more minutes afterward, you should sit or lie with the treated ear up. With light pressure on the plastic bottle, Locacorten-Vioform is dropped into the ear canal.

Alternatively, a compress can be moistened with the solution and inserted into the ear canal. Keep the compress moistened by adding additional solution. It should be replaced at least once every 24 hours.

The duration of treatment should not exceed 7-10 days. If your symptoms do not improve within about 1 week, or if they worsen after using Locacorten-Vioform for one week, consult your doctor.

The solution can be warmed to body temperature before each use (eg by holding the bottle in your hand). Avoid warming above body temperature. Avoid touching the dropper with your ear, fingers, or other material.

If you have the impression that the effect of Locacorten-Vioform is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Use for children and adolescents

Locacorten-Vioform should not be given to children under 2 years of age.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Hypersensitivity (eg skin redness or rash) may occur as a less common side effect. If you have an allergic skin reaction (hypersensitivity), stop taking Locacorten-Vioform and contact your doctor.

How to store Locacorten-Vioform

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
