Losartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin II is a body-specific substance that binds to receptors in blood vessels and causes them to constrict. This causes the blood pressure to rise. Losartan prevents the binding of angiotensin II to these receptors , which causes the blood vessels to dilate and the blood pressure to drop. Losartan prevents further renal impairment in patients with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes .
