Vanquin 50 mg Coated Pyrwine Tablet
What Vanquin Is And What Vanquin Used For:
Vanquin is a remedy against tapeworms. Vanquin contains a red dye, pyrvin, which has a specific effect against tapeworms.
Ringworm is common in families with children and is often spread to all family members. It lays thousands of microscopic eggs outside the intestinal opening, causing itching.
The eggs are spread from person to person through contact with infected objects or dust. They can stay alive for 2-3 weeks in e.g. the home (clothing, carpets, dust) and pets’ fur.
The eggs follow the inhaled air into the nose and mouth and reach the stomach when you swallow. From the stomach, the eggs reach the intestine, where they quickly develop into new worms.
The active substance in Vanquin, pyrvine, kills the tapeworm and its larvae and thus interrupts the production of the infective eggs. The eggs that have already been produced are not affected by pyrvine.
To avoid the further spread of infection, it is recommended that everyone in the family is treated simultaneously and that all family members repeat the treatment after 2-3 weeks.
What You Need To Know Before You Take Vanquin:
Do Not Take Vanquin:
- If you are allergic to pyrvine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings And Precautions:
The active substance in Vanquin is pyrvine, a strong dye; therefore, the stool is colored red by the medicine. Any vomit leaves permanent stains on clothes and furniture.
In addition to treatment with Vanquin suspension, it is important to be extra careful with hygiene. You should therefore follow the hygiene advice below:
- Wash the tail and adjacent skin areas daily with soap and water.
- Wash your hands often. Keep your nails short and clean.
- Sleep in pajamas or tight pants. Change underwear and pajamas daily.
- Change and wash the bedding often. Used clothes should be washed the same day they are changed.
- The bathtub, bathroom floor, and toilet seat are washed daily.
- In case of itching, the tapeworm can be removed with an ear stick or similar. The worm likes to hide in the folds at the intestinal opening. Wash thoroughly afterward.
- Pets are not affected by roundworms, but worm eggs can be found in the fur. Therefore, wash dogs and cats more often than usual.
Other Medicines And Vanquin:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, are using, or might be taking any other medicines.

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per tablet, i.e. it is almost “sodium-free”. Vanquin tablets contain methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate, which can cause an allergic reaction (possibly delayed).
