What Tikacillin is and what it is used for
The active substance in Tikacillin, phenoxymethylpenicillin, is penicillin (antibacterial drug) that prevents the bacteria from building up a normal cell wall. Without a functioning cell wall, the bacterium dies quickly.
Tikacillin is used for strep throat, tooth infection, pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infection, and bacterial infection in the skin, and subcutaneous tissue (such as inflammation of the connective tissue, and Borrelia infection ).
What you need to know before taking Tikacillin
Do not take Tikacillin
- if you are allergic to penicillin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Tikacillin.
If you are hypersensitive to cephalosporins (another group of antibacterial drugs), consult a doctor about this before using Tikacillin.
In the event of a rash, fever, and/or facial swelling, the treatment should be discontinued and a doctor contacted.
Other medicines and Tikacillin
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.
Tikacillin can affect or be affected by other medicines:
- certain medicines against tumors and disorders of the immune system (methotrexate)
- medicines for gout (probenecid).
Tikacillin with food and drink
Tikacillin is most effective if taken on an empty stomach, or at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
There are no known risks when using Tikacillin during pregnancy.
Phenoxymethylpenicillin passes into breast milk but is unlikely to affect children who are breastfed.
Driving ability and use of machinery
No known influence on the ability to drive or use machines.
How to take Tikacillin
Always take this medicine as directed by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
The dose is determined by the doctor who adjusts it individually for you. The size of the dose depends on the type of infection and body weight.
If you have taken too much Tikacillin:
If you have ingested too much medicine or if, for example, a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for an assessment of the risk and advice.
If you forget to take Tikacillin
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed tablet.
If you stop taking Tikacillin
Even if you feel better already after a few days, the entire Tikacillin regimen must be completed as prescribed. Otherwise, some bacteria can survive for a while, grow and cause the infection to return.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Common (may affect 1 in 10 users): Stomach upset, mainly nausea or loose stools, and skin rash.
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): Hypersensitivity reaction with fever and/or joint pain. Hives, blood count change ( eosinophilia ).
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 users): Severe allergic reaction ( anaphylactic reaction ).
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 users): Itching.
In case of prolonged or severe diarrhea, you should contact a doctor.
Itching in the abdomen can be caused by fungal overgrowth.
How to store Tikacillin
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Use before the expiry date stated on the packaging after the Issue. data or EXP. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
Medicines must not be thrown into the drain or among the household waste. Ask the pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer used. These measures will help to protect the environment.
