How you are given StructoKabiven
Your doctor determines the dose based on your body weight and body function. StructoKabiven will be given to you by healthcare professionals. Your medicine will only be given through a central vein.
You may be monitored during the treatment.
If you have received too much StructoKabiven
It is unlikely that you will be given too much medicine, as the healthcare staff will monitor you during treatment. Effects of an overdose can be nausea, fever, vomiting, chills, sweating, and fluid retention. Hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels) and electrolyte disturbances have also been reported.
If you receive too high a dose of StructoKabiven, there is a risk that you will ingest too much fat. This is called “fat overload syndrome”. More information can be found in section 4, “Potential side effects”.
If you experience any of the symptoms described above or think you have been given too much StructoKabiven, tell your doctor or nurse straight away. Infusion one will be interrupted or continued but with a lower dosage. Symptoms usually disappear when the infusion is stopped or when the infusion rate is reduced.
If you have further questions about the use of this product, contact your healthcare professional.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Tell the healthcare staff immediately if during the infusion you develop a fever, rash, swollen tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, chills, sweating, nausea, or vomiting. These symptoms may be an allergic reaction caused by the drug.
Other side effects include:
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): more than usual enzymes that show how the liver is working, nausea, headache, and increased body temperature.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people): palpitations ( tachycardia ), high blood pressure.
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people): breathing difficulties, diarrhea, rash, back pain, dizziness.
“Fat overload syndrome”
If your body has problems dealing with fat because you have received too much StructoKabiven, you may suffer from “fat overload syndrome”. The problem can also occur due to a rapid change in your condition (eg kidney problems or an infection ). Possible symptoms are fever, high-fat content in the blood ( hyperlipidemia ), the cells and tissues, disorders in various organs, and coma. The symptoms usually disappear if the infusion is stopped.
Excess amino acids
This can occur when the infusion rate is increased and the level of amino acids is exceeded. Possible symptoms are nausea, vomiting, chills, sweating, and an increase in body temperature. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may want to do a blood test to check the amount of nitrogen-containing substances in your blood.
Excess glucose
This can occur when your body has difficulty getting rid of glucose, causing blood sugar levels to be too high (hyperglycemia).
