100% inhalation vapor, liquid
Sevoflurane
What Sevorane is and what it is used for
Sevorane is an anesthetic that is inhaled to achieve or maintain the deep anesthesia required during surgery. The drug causes you to lose consciousness and the ability to feel pain during surgery. The medicine is given by an anesthetist into the air you breathe before undergoing surgery. The anesthetist administers the medicine using a carburetor that converts the liquid into a gas so that you can inhale it. Sevorane is only used by healthcare professionals. Sevorane is given to both adults and children.
What you need to know before using Sevorane
Do not use Sevorane
Tell your doctor if any of the following apply or have affected you.
- if you have reacted negatively in the past to anesthesia or if you know that you are hypersensitive to certain anesthetics, so-called halogenated anesthetics, which are given. You may have previously affected liver function, an increase in the number of white blood cells, or fever after anesthesia with one of these medicines.
- if you have a known or suspected hereditary predisposition to an unusual type of severe high fever ( malignant hyperthermia ).
There may also be other reasons why it is inappropriate to give anesthesia with Sevorane.
Take special care with Sevorane:
- if you have low blood pressure and impaired breathing or dehydration.
- if you have a known or suspected hereditary predisposition to an unusual type of severe high fever ( malignant hyperthermia ). In sensitive patients, certain anesthetics can cause a condition in the skeleton and muscles that can lead to an increase in the need for oxygen and an increase in temperature.
- if you have impaired kidney function.
- if you have some heart problems or irregular heartbeat.
- if you are prone to cramps.
- if you have or have previously had liver problems such as hepatitis (hepatitis), jaundice, or received treatment with drugs that impair liver function. If you have previously had liver damage, jaundice, fever, or an increase in certain white blood cells ( eosinophils ), there may be a reason to give anesthesia with a medicine that does not contain sevoflurane.
- if you as a patient have been repeatedly anesthetized with anesthetics similar to Sevorane within a relatively short interval. This may increase the risk of liver damage.
- if you have or have had neuromuscular diseases, e.g. Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
- if you are a child and have a neuromuscular disease called Pompe’s disease.
- if you have a so-called mitochondrial disease.
- if you have elevated pressure in the brain ( intracranial pressure ).
As with other anesthetics, minor mood swings may persist for several days after anesthesia.
Other medicines and Sevorane
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
The following medicines may affect or be affected by Sevoflurane:
- muscle relaxants (eg pancuronium, vecuronium, atracurium, or succinylcholine).
- painkillers such as opioids (morphine, alfentanil and sufentanil) or benzodiazepines . When combined with Sevorane, the result may be a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
- Using Sevorane with amphetamines or ephedrine may cause an acute increase in blood pressure.
- use of Sevorane with certain medicines for high blood pressure (so-called beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers) may affect the effect.
- Concomitant use of herbal remedies containing St. John’s wort may cause severe hypotension and late recovery after anesthesia with Sevorane.
- the use of isoniazid (medicine given for tuberculosis ) or alcohol with Sevorane may affect plasma fluoride concentrations. Using isoniazid with Sevorane may increase the risk of liver effects with isoniazid.
- laughing gas.
- The use of Sevorane with certain antidepressants, called non-selective MAOIs, may increase the risk of problems during surgery.
Sevorane may affect the sensitivity of the heart to certain cardiac stimulants ( adrenaline, isoprenaline, and norepinephrine ), which may increase the risk of irregular heartbeat.
Use of Sevorane with food and drink
Before sleeping, do not eat or drink. The medical staff will give you detailed instructions on this.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: There is no experience of use in pregnant women. Sevorane should not be given to you if you are pregnant except after special consideration.
Lactation: There is no data on whether sevoflurane or its degradation products pass into breast milk. Due to the lack of documented experience, you are advised not to breastfeed for 48 hours after receiving sevoflurane and discard milk produced during this time. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure.
Driving and using machines
Sevorane has a profound effect on your ability to drive and use tools or machines. Do not drive or use any tools or machines until your doctor tells you it is safe. Anesthetics can affect wakefulness for several days. This can affect your ability to perform tasks that require sharp attention. Consult your anesthetist when it is safe for you to drive and use machines again.
How to use Sevorane
Sevorane is only used by healthcare professionals. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Awakening: Awakening generally occurs quickly after anesthesia with Sevorane. You may therefore need pain relief early after surgery. Recovery after anesthesia (anesthesia) will be ensured before you leave the recovery ward.
If you use more Sevorane than you should
Because Sevorane is given under strict supervision and dosed individually, it is unlikely that you will receive too much. If you receive too much Sevorane, your anesthetist will take the necessary action.
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Sevoflurane, like all anesthetics, can cause transient heart-lung function that is transient. Most side effects are mild to moderate in severity and transient. Nausea, vomiting, and severe confusion ( delirium ) have occurred after surgery, which is common after surgery and anesthesia and may be due to the anesthetic gas, other medications given before or after surgery, and your reaction to the surgery.

Abnormally slow heartbeat
Low blood pressure
Cough
Nausea
