What Samarin Is And What Samarin Medicine Used For

Traditionally samarin medicine used for heartburn and acid reflux. It contains bicarbonate which has an acid-neutralizing effect in the stomach.

What You Need To Know Before Using Samarin

Do Not Take Samarin

  • If you are allergic to sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • If you have impaired kidney function.

Children And Young People

Samarin medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Other Medicines And Samarin

Intake of this medicine may affect the effectiveness of certain other medicines, e.g. certain antibiotics ( tetracyclines ), ketoconazole tablets, and gabapentin tablets. Therefore, these medicines should not be taken at the same time. Other possible interactions with drugs or food have not been studied.

In case of contact with a doctor or other healthcare professional, remember to tell them that you are taking or have recently taken this over-the-counter medicine.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, And Fertility

No known risks during use during pregnancy and lactation.

The potential effect of the drug on fertility has not been studied.

Driving And Using Machines

This medicine does not affect the ability to drive and use machines.

Samarin Contains Sodium And Potassium

Due to its sodium and potassium content, it is not suitable for people on a diet low in sodium or potassium.

How To Take Samarin

  • Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet.

If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or other healthcare professional.

  • Adults, the elderly, and children over 12 years:
    • 1 effervescent tablet if needed, but not more than 4 times daily. The tablet is dissolved in a glass of water. Continuous use is limited to 2 weeks. Talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse during this time.
  • Not recommended for children under 12 years.

If You Take More Samarin Than You Should

If you have ingested too much medicine or if e.g. If a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice.

Possible Samarin Side Effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

How To Store Samarin

  • Store in the original package. Moisture sensitive.
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton (after EXP). The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
