What Pethidine Meda is and what it is used for

Pethidine Meda contains the active substance pethidine, as pethidine hydrochloride, and belongs to a group of strong painkillers called opioids.

Pethidine Meda is used for severe pain.

Petidin contained in Petidin Meda may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

What you need to know before you use Petidin Meda

Do not use Petidin Meda

  • if you are allergic to pethidine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • in conditions with a lot of mucus in the airways
  • in case of impaired respiratory function
  • in case of anxiety in patients who are under the influence of alcohol or sleeping pills
  • when co-administered with MAO inhibitors (antidepressants).

Warnings and cautions

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before using Petidin Meda

  • in asthma
  • in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • in case of head injury
  • in case of elevated head pressure
  • at low blood pressure with decreased blood volume
  • in case of impaired liver or kidney function
  • in epilepsy and heart rhythm disorders.

There is a risk of addiction to Petidin Meda.

Other medicines and Petidin Meda

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

Concomitant use of Petidin Meda with certain medicines increases the risk of drowsiness, difficulty breathing ( respiratory depression ), coma and may be life-threatening. Examples of these drugs are:

  • other strong painkillers (opioids)
  • sedatives, hypnotics, and antiepileptic drugs (eg benzodiazepines, certain antihistamines, and barbiturates ) 
  • anesthetics for anesthesia before e.g. an operation
  • certain medicines for mental illness (phenothiazines)
  • muscle relaxants

Due to this, the concomitant use of Petidin Meda and the above medicines should only be considered by your doctor when other treatment options are not possible. If your doctor prescribes Petidin Meda at the same time as any of the above medicines, your dose and treatment time should be limited by your doctor. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the above medicines and carefully follow your doctor’s dose recommendations. It may be helpful to inform friends or relatives about being aware of the signs and symptoms listed above. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

The effect of the treatment can also be affected if Petidin Meda is taken at the same time as certain other medicines. The following combinations with Petidin Meda should be avoided:

  • antidepressants ( MAOIs ) (moclobemide, selegiline ),
  • antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine), 
  • anticonvulsant drug ( phenytoin ),
  • anti- HIV drugs (ritonavir),
  • serotonergic drugs, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRIs, such as paroxetine, fluoxetine, citalopram, escitalopram, sertraline, fluvoxamine), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors ( SNRIs, such as venlafaxine, duloxetine), and perforation excluded.

Pethidine Meda and alcohol

Alcohol should not be used during treatment with Petidin Meda, as the combination may cause e.g. impaired respiratory function ( respiratory depression ).

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The use of pethidine during childbirth may cause the newborn to have impaired respiratory function. If Petidin Meda is used for a long time during pregnancy, the newborn baby may develop withdrawal symptoms.

Pethidine passes into breast milk. Therefore, talk to your doctor before using Petidin Meda while breastfeeding.

Driving and using machines

Pethidine Meda may affect your ability to drive or use machines as it may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and reduced reactivity. This should be taken into account when sharper attention is required, e.g. when driving and using machines.

You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention. One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and/or side effects. Descriptions of these effects and side effects can be found in other sections. Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How to use Petidin Meda

The medicine is given by a doctor or nurse. Your doctor will decide on a dose to suit you.

Consult a doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or are unsure.

If you use more Petidin Meda than you should

The probability that you get too much Petidin Meda is small when you are given this by a doctor or other hospital staff. Symptoms that you can get are e.g. dizziness, muscle twitching, cramps, nausea, and aroused mood. If you have further questions, you can contact the Poison Information Center (tel. 112) for risk assessment and advice.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Several of the side effects are dose-dependent and as with all opioids, there is a risk of addiction with Petidin Meda.

Very common (may affect more than 1 user in 10):

  • Nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • dry mouth.

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people ) : 

  • Euphoria (feeling of happiness),
  • dizziness,
  • impaired respiratory function,
  • drowsiness,
  • fainting spells,
  • low blood pressure,
  • palpitation,
  • constipation,
  • cramps in the bile ducts,
  • hives,
  • reddening of the skin,
  • difficulty urinating.

Has been reported (occurs in an unknown number of users):

  • cramps,
  • muscle twitching,
  • tremors.

How to store Petidin Meda

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label after EXP. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
