what Pepcid Duo Is And What Pepcid Duo Used For?
Pepcid Duo is intended for short-term treatment of temporary heartburn and acid reflux symptoms in adults and adolescents over 16 years of age.
The tablets contain three active ingredients:
- Famotidine is a medicine called “H2 antagonist (blocker),” which reduces the acid production in your stomach.
- Magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate are so-called “antacids.” They neutralize the acid in your stomach.
What You Need To Know Before Taking Pepcid Duo?
Do Not Take Pepcid Duo:
- If you are allergic to famotidine, magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, or any of the other ingredients of the tablet (listed in section 6)
- If you have severe kidney problems
- You are allergic to other H2 antagonists (medicines that treat the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux)
Take Special Care With Pepcid Duo:
Talk to your doctor before taking Pepcid Duo if you have the following:
- Indigestion and also has lost weight involuntarily
- Prolonged abdominal pain
- Indigestion for the first time, or if your symptoms have recently changed the character
- Too much calcium in your blood
- Too much magnesium in your blood
- Too little phosphorus in your blood
- Too much calcium in your urine, or have previously had kidney stones
- Kidney or liver problems
If you use Pepcid Duo for a long time, your blood may have elevated calcium levels. This is more likely if you also take other medicines that contain calcium and vitamin D. If this happens, your kidneys may be affected. Stop using this medicine and consult a doctor if you have the following:
- New symptoms
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain when swallowing
- Severe vomiting
- Black stools
- Choking or chest pain
If your symptoms persist or worsen after 2 weeks of treatment, discontinue and contact your doctor.
Children And Young People:
Do not give this medicine to children under 16, as no data shows safety and efficacy for this group.
Other Medicines And Pepcid Duo?
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines or might take other medicines.
- Calcium carbonate, when used as a medicine for high levels of phosphate in the blood ( hyperphosphatemia ) in patients undergoing dialysis.
Calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide (antacids) contained in Pepcid Duo can cause the body to stop absorbing other drugs properly. Therefore, Pepcid Duo and other medicines should be taken at least 2 hours apart.
These medicines include:
- Antibiotics (for bacterial infections)
- Beta-blockers (for blood pressure )
- Bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis )
- Glucocorticosteroids (for inflammatory conditions)
- Integrase inhibitors ( for HIV infection )
- Fentiazine neuroleptics and sulpiride (for psychosis/schizophrenia)
- Thyroid hormones
- Salicylates and diflunisal (for fever or pain)
- Chloroquine and proguanil (for malaria )
- Digoxin (for heart disease)
- Estramustine (for prostate cancer)
- Fexofenadine (for allergic symptoms)
- Fluorine
- Indomethacin ( NSAID for pain / inflammation)
- Iron
- Ledipasvir phosphorus (for hepatitis C)
- Rosuvastatin (a statin)
- Strontium (for osteoporosis )
- Zinc
- Resins of sodium and calcium polystyrene sulfonate
- Teriflunomide (for multiple sclerosis ).
Famotidine in Pepcid Duo may reduce the uptake of atazanavir and rilpivirine (for HIV ), cyanocobalamin (for vitamin B12 deficiency), and most tyrosine kinase inhibitors (for cancer).
The famotidine and antacid combination may reduce the uptake of antifungal azole agents (ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole) and ulipristal (an emergency contraceptive).
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, And Fertility:
Do not take Pepcid duo if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby. If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking this medicine, your doctor will decide if you should stop breastfeeding or stop taking Pepcid Duo.
Driving And Using Machines:
Pepcid Duo is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you get dizzy, do not drive or use machines. You are responsible for assessing whether you can drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened vigilance.

Pepcid Duo Contains Lactose, Glucose, And Benzyl Alcohol:
Lactose and glucose: If your doctor has told you that you are intolerant to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking Pepcid Duo.
This medicine contains 0.0002 mg of benzyl alcohol in each tablet. Benzyl alcohol can cause allergic reactions. If you have impaired liver or kidney function or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. Large amounts of benzyl alcohol can be stored in the body and cause side effects (metabolic acidosis ).
How To Take Pepcid Duo?
Always take this medicine as described in this leaflet or as your pharmacist tells you. Contact your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Adults and adolescents (over 16 years):
- When you have heartburn or acid reflux, chew a tablet well.
If possible, drink a glass of water to rinse the tablet. - Do not take more than 2 tablets a day.
- Do not take Pepcid Duo for over 2 weeks (see also point 2).

If You Take More Pepcid Duo Than You Should:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Contact your doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice if you have been given too much medicine.
If You Forget To Take Pepcid Duo:
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Possible Pepcid Duo Side Effects:
Pepcid Duo can cause side effects like all medicines, although not everybody gets them. You should STOP taking Pepcid Duo and see a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as:
- Swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing; hives, and difficulty breathing (frequency not known – frequency can not be calculated from the available data)
- The severe allergic reaction that causes difficulty breathing or dizziness (frequency not known – frequency can not be calculated from the available data)
- Severe, extensive reaction on the skin (which may begin with painful red areas, then large blisters, and end with skin detachment of the outer skin layers) (very rare).

- Headache

- Dry mouth

- Rash
- Itching
- Somnolence
- Hives
- Unusual fatigue or weakness
- Energy loss
There have been very rare reports of people taking high doses of famotidine (one of the active ingredients in Pepcid Duo):
Very rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 people):
- Liver problems and abnormal blood test results.
- Mental conditions include hallucinations, confusion, difficulty sleeping, seizures, drowsiness, anxiety, and depression.
- Blood diseases include low platelet counts and red or white blood cells. Reducing the number of white blood cells can reduce your resistance to infection. Therefore, if you get an infection with symptoms such as fever and severe deterioration of your general condition or with local infection symptoms such as sore throat/throat/mouth or urinary tract problems, you should see a doctor immediately. A blood sample will be taken to check for any reduction in white blood cells.
