What Nasoferm Is And What It Is Used For
Nasoferm is used for the short-term treatment of nasal congestion in colds and acute sinusitis.
Nasoferm spray has a decongestant effect which reduces nasal congestion and facilitates breathing.
What You Need To Know Before You Give Nasoferm
Do Not Give To Your Child:
- Is allergic to xylometazoline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- Had pituitary gland one (brain appendix) removed?
Warnings And Cautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before giving your child this medicine.
- If your child suffers from heart disease (e.g., long QT syndrome)
People who are sensitive to drugs with an adrenaline-like effect (e.g., adrenaline, ephedrine ) may experience side effects such as
- Sleep disturbance
- Dizziness
- Tremors
- Palpitations
- High blood pressure and should, therefore, not use it without first talking to a doctor.
Nasoferm should not be used for more than 10 consecutive days. Prolonged use can cause side effects in the form of so-called drug-induced rhinitis ( inflammation of the nasal mucosa) with symptoms such as
- Nasal congestion
- Burning
- Local irritation
- Dry nasal mucosa
Other Medicines And Nasoferm
Treatment with this medicine may be affected if this medicine is taken at the same time as tricyclic (e.g., clomipramine, amitriptyline) or tetracyclic antidepressant medicines (e.g., maprotiline). Therefore consult a physician or pharmacist before concomitant use.
Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
As a precautionary measure, this medicine should not be used by pregnant or lactating women except as directed by a physician.
Driving And Using Machines
Nasoferm does not affect your ability to drive or use machines.
Nasoferm Contains Benzalkonium Chloride
Nasoferm contains benzalkonium chloride, which may be irritating to the nasal mucosa.
How To Give Nasoferm
- Nasal spray, solution Nasoferm 0.5 mg
- Children 1-10 years: 1 spray shower in each nostril if needed 2-3 times daily.
- For children over 10 years, there is a higher strength of spray.
- For children under 1 year, saline solution is recommended.
- Another dose, according to the doctor’s prescription.
- It should be used for a maximum of 10 consecutive days.
- The effect is noticeable within a few minutes and lasts up to 10 hours.
Instructions For Nasoferm Uses
Before using the spray for the first time, press the pump twice to obtain an even spray shower. Then store the bottle upright.
- If necessary, sniff out the nose. Remove the protective cap on the spray bottle.
2. Hold the bottle upright as in the picture and insert it into one nostril.
Press the pump once, and at the same time, inhale lightly through the nose.
3. Repeat the procedure in the other nostril.
4. When the nose feels stuffy again, repeat the procedure 2-3 times daily.
If You Take More Nasoferm Than You Should
Contact a doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice if your child has ingested too much medicine.
Possible Nasoferm Side Effects
This medicine can cause side effects like all medicines, although not everybody gets them.
Common (affects more than 1 user in 100):
- Burning or irritation of the nose
- Dry nasal mucosa
Rare (affects less than 1 in 1,000 people):
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea
Uncommon (affects up to 1 in 100 people):
- Nasal bleeding
Isolated cases of skin rash and transient visual disturbances have been reported.
How To Store Nasoferm
- Keep out of sight and reach of children.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the carton after “EXP.”: The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
- No special storage instructions.
The medicine should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.

The active substance is xylometazoline hydrochloride.
- 1 ml nasal spray solution 0.5 mg/ml contains Xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.5 mg.
- The other ingredients are benzalkonium chloride 50% solution ( preservative ), glycerol, sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, and purified water.
