What Methergin is and what it is used for
Methergine has a strong astringent effect on the uterine muscles.
Methergine reduces blood loss during childbirth, cesarean section, or abortion. Then the uterus has difficulty returning to its normal size after childbirth. Treatment of post-bleeding during cot time.
What you need to know before taking Methergin
Do not take Methergin:
- if you are hypersensitive to methylergomethrin maleate, any of the other ingredients of Methergin or to the group of medicines (ergot alkaloids) to which Methergin belongs.
- if you are pregnant.
- at the first or second stage of labor (before delivery of the anterior axis).
- at very high blood pressure .
- in pregnancy poisoning (characterized by high blood pressure , edema , protein in the urine and cramps).
- clogged blood vessels (eg blood clots).
- in case of blood poisoning.
Warnings and cautions
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking Methergin:
- if you have mild to moderate blood pressure
- if you have any heart disease or if you are at risk for heart disease (eg smoking, obesity, diabetes , high cholesterol )
- if you have impaired liver or kidney function
Other medicines and Methergin:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.
You must tell your doctor if you are taking the following medicines:
- medicines for fungal infections (so-called azole antifungals such as keoconazole, itraconazole or voriconazole)
- certain medicines for infections (so-called macrolide antibiotics, eg erythromycin, clarithromycin or troleandomycin)
- anti- HIV drugs (so-called protease inhibitors , eg ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir or delavirdine)
- vasoconstrictive drugs for migraines such as sumatriptan or ergot alkaloids such as ergotamine or so-called beta-blockers
- bromocriptine (medicine to inhibit breast-feeding). Concomitant use with Methergin is not recommended.
- prostaglandins (which facilitate contraction of the myometrium, eg sulprostone, dinoprostone, misoprostol) whose effect is enhanced by Methergin
- glyceryl trinitrate and other medicines for angina pectoris , whose effect is reduced by Methergin
- CYP3A inducers (eg nevirapine or rifampicin) reduce the effect of Methergin
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Risk of fetal harm. Therefore, do not use Methergin during pregnancy unless directed to do so by a doctor.
Methergine passes into breast milk and there is a risk that breastfed babies will be affected. Therefore, you should not breastfeed during treatment with Methergine and for at least 12 hours after taking the last dose. Milk excreted during this period should be discarded.
Driving and using machines
As the drug may cause dizziness and seizures, caution is advised when driving and using machines.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Common (in more than 1 in 100 people): High blood pressure, headache, rash, abdominal pain (caused by uterine contractions).
Uncommon (in less than 1 in 100 and more than 1 in 1000 people): Low blood pressure, chest pain, dizziness, sweating, seizures, nausea, vomiting.
Rare (in less than 1 in 1,000 people): Slow or rapid heartbeat, palpitations, blood vessel contractions in small blood vessels.
Very rare (in less than 1 in 10,000 people): Severe hypersensitivity reaction (eg itching, skin reaction, swelling, and shortness of breath), hallucinations, tinnitus, heart attack, contractions of the heart vessels, inflammation of blood vessels, nasal congestion, diarrhea, muscle cramps.
No known frequency (can not be calculated from the available data): weakness or paralysis of the legs and face, speech difficulties (signs of cerebrovascular disease), angina ( angina pectoris ) with symptoms such as chest pain, severe irregular heartbeat (symptoms of AV block)
How to store Methergin
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Store in a refrigerator (2 ° C-8 ° C). Do not freeze. Sensitive to light. Can be stored at a maximum of 25 ° C for a maximum of 2 weeks
