What Microlax is and what it is used for
Microlax contains sodium citrate and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate. Microlax is a fast-acting micro-enema that softens hard stools without irritating the intestines.
Microlax is used for temporary constipation. Microlax is also used to empty the bowel before examining the rectum ( rectoscope ).
You need to talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse.
What you need to know before using Microlax
Do not use Microlax
- if you are allergic to sodium citrate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and cautions
If no improvement occurs, consult a physician. Avoid prolonged use.
Other medicines and Microlax
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.
Microlax may affect or be affected by certain medicines that contain the following active substance:
- Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (used for high potassium levels in the blood)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Microlax can be used during pregnancy and lactation.
Driving and using machines
Microlax has no known effect on the ability to drive and use machines.
Microlax contains sorbic acid
Microlax contains sorbic acid which may cause local skin reactions (eg contact dermatitis).
How to use Microlax
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse has told you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.
The recommended dose is:
Adults and children: The contents of a tube are injected into the rectum. Another dose according to the doctor’s prescription.
Instructions for use

1. | Turn off the closure (see Figure 1). |
2. | Moisten the tip with a drop of the contents of the tube. |
3. | Insert the tip of the tube completely into the rectal opening. Note! In children under 3 years of age, the tube tip is inserted only to about half its length (see marking). |

4. | Empty the tube by pressing on the shoulder of the tube (see Figure 2). |
5. | Pull out the tube still clamped. |
Usually, the effect is obtained within 5-15 minutes.
If you use more Microlax than you should
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Isolated cases of allergic reactions including swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, low blood pressure, or spasm of the trachea have been reported. Stop taking the medicine and see a doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.
Has been reported (occurs in an unknown number of users): abdominal pain, discomfort from the rectum. Hypersensitivity reactions (eg hives ).
How to store Microlax
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after EXP. day. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
Do not store above 25 ° C.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.

- The active substances are sodium citrate 90 mg / ml and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate 9 mg / ml.
- The other ingredients are sorbitol, glycerol , sorbic acid (E200), purified water.

The white plastic tube with tube tip and swivel closure 4×5 ml,
12×5 ml, 50×5 ml and 200×5 ml.
