Splitting means that the child has difficulty in directing both eyes in the same direction. It allows the child to see double. Sometimes the vision can develop worse. There are various treatments to correct the spleen. Glasses can help if the child has a refractive error. Vision can sometimes be trained by covering one eye. Sometimes surgery is needed.
Strabismus can also be hidden. Then the scab is usually noticed when the child is tired and the eyes slip apart. It is common for newborn babies to discern from time to time as vision is not fully developed. Even adults can divide or see double.
When parting, the brain sees two images
Distribution means that one child’s eye is directed in another direction in relation to the other. Then the eyes look a little next to each other and the brain sees two pictures. This is because the same image ends up in different places on the retina of the eyes.
The child can then see double and lose the deep vision. Small children’s brains can overlook one image to avoid seeing double. Sometimes, squinting can cause the child’s visual acuity to deteriorate.
What is the reason for the discord?
Strabismus can be due to refractive errors in the eye. Sometimes it is due to an illness or eye damage. The scab can also be hereditary. It is common to not find the reason why the child is divorcing.
Refractive error in the eye
Children with common refractive errors can sometimes divide. For example, in myopia or myopia. Then the distinction is that the child must strain his eyes to see as clearly as possible.
Eye damage
Sometimes, strabismus can be caused by eye damage. The child may have scars in the retina of one eye which gives a visual impairment. Then the eye can split because it can not fix so well.
Disease
The distinction can sometimes be due to a disease. For example, it could be any of the following:
- The child can divorce if they have a high fever.
- The child has a disease that affects the entire body, where scaling is one of several symptoms. Examples are muscle diseases such as myasthenia gravis and infectious diseases such as tick boronia.
- The child can divide if they have had a brain hemorrhage or a brain tumor. This is because the nerves to the muscles of the eyes are affected.
Newborn babies can divorce
It is common for newborn babies to distinguish now and then. This is because vision is not fully developed when the baby is born. When the child is between three and four months, they can direct their eyes in the same direction all the time.
The sight only develops on one eye
The child’s visual acuity may, after some time, sink into the eye that discerns. This is true when the eye is constantly discerning. The child’s brain ignores the image of the squinting eye to avoid seeing double. Thus, the sight of the squinting eye is not trained. The brain instead concentrates on the image of the eye that does not discern. This means that visual acuity only develops on that eye.
Hidden stuttering can cause headaches
When the eye discriminates all the time it is called manifest scab. Strabismus can also be hidden. Then no discernment is visible. The eyes are directed in the same direction, but with some effort.
Hidden discernment can cause problems such as:
- The child may become tired in the eyes.
- The child may have a headache.
- The child can see double. This is because the child must constantly strain the brain to keep his eyes directed in the same direction.
Hidden discernment is usually noticed when the child is tired or ill. Then the eyes can slip apart. The child often sees double as the cooperation between the eyes is broken.
Hidden discernment does not lead to worse vision
Hidden stuttering can cause a lot of trouble but really does no harm as it does not cause the child to look worse.
Sometimes the trouble can increase with time so that the eye discerns all the time.
When and where should I seek care?
Contact a child care center, bvc, if any of this applies to your child:
- The child is older than three months and is constantly divorcing.
- The child is older than six months and sometimes divorces.
If it’s in a hurry
Immediately contact a health center or an on-call reception if the child suddenly begins to divide, without having previously done so. Then the scab can be due to disease and the child needs to get to the ophthalmologist quickly.
Examination of the eyes
There are several studies that can be done to find out what form of squabbling the child has. It is important that the child is examined as they risk getting visual acuity on the squinting eye.
The mobility of the eyes and the vision are checked
The child’s eyes are usually examined by an orthopedist, an ophthalmologist who is specially trained in squinting in children. The survey does not hurt.
Here’s how an investigation can go:
- The child’s eyesight is checked on each eye. The child is then allowed to sit on a chair with one patch for one eye at a time and say or point to symbols. Younger children can sit on the parent’s lap.
- The child’s eyes are examined to control the mobility of the eyes and the ability to focus. Then the child can follow an object with his eyes.
- The child’s eyes are examined to see if anything is different. Then one eye is covered at a time to see which eye is different, and if so how much.
- The similarity between the eyes is examined.
An ophthalmologist can do the examinations if there is no orthopedist at the hospital you contact.
Examination of vision and functions of the eyes
The child can also be examined by an ophthalmologist. This is done to see if the eyes work properly or if the child needs glasses. Then the child can sit in a chair or in a parent’s lap.
Here’s how an investigation can go:
- The child receives eye drops that enlarge the pupil. This means that the eye cannot adjust the vision at different distances, accommodating. The eye drops may fade a little but it goes over quickly.
- The doctor glows with different lamps through the special glass to measure if there are refractive errors.
- The doctor examines the inner parts of the eye, such as the lens, glass body, optic nerve, and retina.
- Sometimes measurement is also made when the child is allowed to look at a picture in an appliance with chin support.
It is nice for the child to protect his eyes from light during the rest of the day, for example with sunglasses or a cap/cap. The eye drops cause the eyes to become sensitive to light because the pupils cannot contract. Reading children also look blurred for a few hours after the eye drops.
Hidden discernment can be detected on examination
A distinction can also be detected by the doctor or orthopedist covering one eye at a time. In this way, togetherness is broken, that is, the ability of the eyes to cooperate so that it becomes a three-dimensional image in the brain.
Small children’s eyes are synthesized on BB and bvc
Bvc makes vision checks to find children with visual impairment. All children’s eyes and eyesight are specifically checked on the following occasions:
- When the child is printed from BB.
- When the baby is about four weeks.
- When the child is about six months, at the six-month check.
- When the child is four and five years. At the four- and five-year checks, the child is allowed to look at a manifest where there are usually four different letters. Sometimes there are figures. The nurse points to a letter on the board and the child is allowed to point to the same letter on a small plate. It may be good to prepare the child for a pat on the eye during the examination.
Treatment on scab
The scab is treated differently depending on what is causing it.
Glasses can help with refractive errors
Sometimes it may be enough for the child to wear glasses to make the squint disappear. This applies when the distinction in children is due to refractive errors, such as myopia or myopia.
Glasses Contributions
Children and young adults who need glasses receive a grant for the visual impairment they have, a so-called glasses grant. The grant is valid from newborn age up to the year the child turns 19.
Until the child reaches the age of eight, it is every county council and region that decides how big the contribution is. Then it is at least SEK 800. The same goes for lenses. If the glasses or lenses cost less than SEK 800, the refund is equal to the cost.
The eyes are trained with a patch over the eye
Visual acuity may decrease or develop worse if the child discriminates with the same eye at all times. By using a patch over the other eye, the sight of the squinting eye can be improved. Then the brain is forced to train the sight of the squinting eye.
Patches for the eye and tape for the glasses
The child is usually allowed to cover for the eye that does not care about a special patch that is available at pharmacies. Sometimes, after a while, the child may have dull tape or special filters glued to one of the glasses.
The eye is covered until the vision is better
An ophthalmologist or orthopedist decides how long the eye should be covered. The overlay is removed when the eyesight is the same on both eyes, or when the sharpening of the squinting eye no longer rises and develops, but has reached the visual potential of the eye. The overlay does not help against the scab itself, but the sight of the squinting eye develops and gets better.
An operation can correct the squint
Often an operation is needed if the child is very different. Then the eyes can be directed in the same direction.
The result will be best if the sight on both eyes is as good as possible. Before the operation, vision can sometimes be improved if the child has a patch for one eye. It is important that children who wear glasses wear them regularly before surgery.
During surgery, the fastening of the eye muscles is strengthened or weakened on one or both eyes. In this way, both eyes are directed in the same direction.
In children with glasses, only the part of the scab that is visible when the glasses are on is operated. This means that the scab can remain even after the operation when the child takes off the glasses.
It is sometimes possible to practice the cooperation between the eyes if the child has hidden discernment. The orthopedist can give advice. The training may, for example, be that the child is allowed to look at his finger all the way to his nose.
Sometimes glasses or surgery is needed
Hidden discernment can be improved with glasses if the child has a refractive error. Sometimes the eye may need surgery. This applies if the hidden discernment increases and the eye discern constantly.
Sometimes the disease is treated first
Occasionally, the scab can be due to a disease. For example, it may be an infection or a tumor. Then the disease is treated first.
This is how vision works
The vision develops from the birth of the child to the age of about ten. The vision is improved by constantly stimulating the eye. The visual center of the brain gradually learns to interpret ever smaller details about the eye sending images of good quality. Visual acuity is also getting better.
When you look at an object, an image is created on the retina of the eye. The image gives rise to electrical signals that are passed through the optic nerve from each eye. The two optic nerves meet and cross each other in the optic nerve junction on the underside of the brain. There, the threads from the two nerves are partially intertwined. When they then continue in two paths, each path contains information from both eyes. The visual pathways continue to the visual center of the neck lobe located in the back of the brain. Here the signals are interpreted and converted into a conscious image.
When you see, the image usually ends up in the same place on the retina in both eyes. The image from the two eyes can then merge into an image in the visual center of the brain. It is important for a deep vision.
