1. What Inderal is and what it is used for
Inderal is a so-called non-selective beta-blocker. It affects many places in the body, including the heart, which is affected so that it beats more slowly and pumps out less blood per minute. This means that blood pressure drops and that the number of attacks of angina in the heart (angina) decreases.
Inderal is used:
- in the treatment of high blood pressure
- to counteract chest pain ( angina pectoris )
- to provide regular cardiac activity
- to protect the heart after a heart attack
- in some thyroid disorders
- in case of tremor (trembling)
- to prevent migraines
- in pheochromocytoma ( adrenal tumor )
Propranolol contained in Inderal may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.
2. What you need to know before taking Inderal
Do not take Inderal:
- if you are allergic to propranolol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- If you have or have had asthma or severe breathing problems for any other reason , do not use Inderal but consult your doctor.
Tell your doctor if you have or have had:
- heart disease such as untreated heart failure or heart block (disorder of the cardiovascular system)
- very slow or irregular heartbeat
- very low blood pressure
- a special type of chest pain called Prinzmetal’s angina
- poor blood circulation
- untreated pheochromocytoma ( tumor of the adrenal glands)
- or if you have fasted
Warnings and cautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Inderal if you have any of the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- thyroid disease
- heart or blood circulation problems
- shortness of breath
- swollen ankles
- or has had a severe allergic reaction in e.g. insect bites
If you have insulin- or tablet-treated diabetes, you should be aware that Inderal may slow down the increase in heart rate that normally accompanies low blood sugar.
Inderal acts slowing down on pulse one. This is normal, but if you are worried, talk to your doctor.
Inderal can in rare cases affect the white blood cells so that the defense of infection deteriorates. If you get an infection with symptoms such as fever with severe general deterioration or fever with sore throat/pharynx/mouth or difficulty urinating, you should see a doctor immediately so that a lack of white blood cells ( agranulocytosis ) can be ruled out via blood tests. It is important that you then have information about your medication.
Other drugs and Inderal
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines. Some medicines may affect or be affected by treatment with Inderal, for example:
- phenobarbital, primidone (drugs against epilepsy )
- verapamil, clonidine , diltiazem or nifedipine (medicines for high blood pressure or angina)
- amiodarone , disopyramide , quinidine , lidocaine or propafenone (medicines for, among other things, arrhythmias in the heart)
- cimetidine (medicine for stomach ulcers and heartburn)
- NSAIDs (anti- inflammatory drugs , such as ibuprofen )
- phenylpropanolamine (mucosal decongestant)
- epinephrine (cardiac stimulant)
- fluvoxamine (antidepressant)
- chlorpromazine (medicine for certain mental illnesses)
- rifampicin (medicine used to treat tuberculosis )
- rizatriptan (anti- migraine medicine )
- theophylline (medicine for certain respiratory diseases)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. There is a risk that the fetus is affected. Propranolol passes into breast milk but is unlikely to affect breastfed infants. However, talk to your doctor if you use Inderal more than occasionally during breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
Some patients may experience temporary dizziness or fatigue associated with treatment with Inderal. This can affect the ability to drive and use machines.
You are responsible for assessing whether you can drive motor vehicles or perform work that requires sharpened vigilance. One of the factors that can affect this ability is the use of drugs due to their effects and/or side effects. A description of these effects and side effects can be found under other headings in the package leaflet. Therefore, read all the information in this leaflet. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Inderal contains lactose
The tablets contain lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
3. How to take Inderal
Dosage instructions
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. Your doctor will decide on a dose to suit you. Dose one is usually distributed and taken on 2-4 occasions during the day.
Use for children
Inderal is used in some cases for the treatment of children with arrhythmias (arrhythmias in the heart) and migraines. Dose one is then adjusted by the doctor according to the child’s age and weight.
User manual
The tablets should be swallowed whole with a little water.
Take the tablets at the same time each day.
If you take more Inderal than you should
Propranolol is severely toxic in case of overdose. If you have ingested too much medicine or if e.g. a child inadvertently ingested the medicine immediately contact a doctor, hospital, or the Poison Information Center for risk assessment and advice.
Overdose causes too low a heart rate, low heart rate , low blood pressure , heart failure , difficulty breathing, drowsiness, seizures or coma .
If you forget to take Inderal
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose , but wait and take the next dose at the usual time.
If you stop taking Inderal
Do not stop taking the tablets without consulting your doctor, even if you are feeling well. If treatment with Inderal is to be discontinued, this should be done gradually according to the doctor’s prescription.

4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) : slow heart rate , cold fingers and toes, deterioration of already poor blood circulation, fatigue or muscle weakness, sleep disturbances, nightmares, shortness of breath. Numbness, chills and paleness of the fingers and toes, when exposed to cold and moisture (Raynaud’s phenomenon).
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) : nausea, diarrhea, vomiting.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people): dizziness, especially when getting up; shortness of breath and / or swollen ankles in people with heart failure , heart block (abnormal heartbeat, dizziness, fatigue, fainting). Change in mood, hallucinations, confusion. Hair loss, itching , worsening of psoriasis , slight bleeding in the skin and mucous membranes. Thrombocytopenia (easy bleeding). Dry eyes, visual disturbances. An ant crawls in the hands. Severe decrease in white blood cell count ( agranulocytosis , see under the heading What to do before and when you use Inderal).
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people): Sweating, symptoms similar to myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness) or worsening of myasthenia gravis . An increased level of ANA (a certain type of antibody is in the blood), but the significance of this is unclear.
The following adverse reactions have been reported (occurring in an unknown number of users): Low blood sugar levels in neonates, infants, children, the elderly, hemodialysis patients, concomitant diabetic patients, long-term patients and patients with chronic liver disease. In rare cases, very low blood sugar levels have given rise to seizures and unconsciousness.

5. How to store Inderal
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. after “EXP”. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
Store in the original package (sensitive to moisture and light). Do not store above 30 ° C.
The medicine should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
