What You Need To Know Before You Use Pyrvin

Do Not Use Pyrvin

  • If you are allergic to pyrvinium embonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings And Cautions

The active substance in Pyrvin is pyrvinium, which is a strong dye and therefore the stool is stained red by the medicine. Any vomiting can cause permanent stains on clothes and furniture.

For the treatment to be successful and to reduce the risk of becoming infected again, it is important that the hands are kept clean, also under the nails, and that they also otherwise carefully take care of hygiene, both personally and in the environment.

Other Drugs And Pyrvin

  • It is not known to affect or be affected by the use of other medicines.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, And Fertility

  • There are no known risks of using pyrvinium during pregnancy or lactation.

Driving And Using Machines

Pyrvin has no or negligible effect on the ability to drive and use machines.

You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention. One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and/or side effects. Descriptions of these effects and side effects can be found in other sections.

Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How To Take Pyrvinium Dosage

Always take pyrvinium dosage exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor advised. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

This tablet is taken as a single dose. The treatment is repeated after 2 weeks. The number depends on body weight, one tablet per 10-15 kg body weight (see table below). It has not been shown that the effect of medicine would be better at a dose exceeding 6 tablets.

All family members should be treated at the same time.

WeightSingle-dose
about 10-15 kg1 tablet
about 15-30 kg2 tablets
about 30-45 kg3 tablets
about 45-60 kg4 tablets
about 60-70 kg5 tablets
over 70 kg6 tablets

It is recommended that the tablets be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of liquid (eg a glass of water).

It is recommended that the tablets are not divided, as they can then stain e.g. the clothes. However, it is possible to split the tablet if the pyrvinium dosage so requires (eg for small children).

Measures to avoid re-infection

  • Good hygiene
  • Since the worm eggs are located around the rectal orifice, careful genital hygiene and handwashing are especially important.
  • Remind children to wash their hands. Hands should be washed thoroughly at least after using the toilet and before meals.
  • Keep your nails short and clean.
  • In connection with the treatment, underwear, pajamas, towels, pillowcases, and sheets must be changed. Put the laundry directly in the washing machine and avoid shaking the garments.
  • Ventilate other bedding carefully.
  • Underwear should be changed twice a day for a week, as the worm eggs can stay alive for several days, even up to a week after the treatment.
  • Above all, the bedroom should be cleaned properly. Vacuum and dry the floors and other surfaces. Also clean door handles and switches.
  • Wash the entire toilet, including the water taps and the knob on the toilet seat.
  • Clean all toys and put away soft toys for a month.
  • Clean the changing table and dispose of used diapers directly in the rubbish.
