What Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium is and what it is used for

Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium is a solution used to remove residues from the body in people with kidney disease during treatment with continuous kidney replacement therapy. It is used in patients with kidney damage but also for the treatment of poisoning. It is the amount of potassium (a salt) in your blood that determines the type of solution you receive. Your doctor will check your potassium levels regularly.

What you need to know before using Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium

Do not use Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium if:

  • you are allergic to any of the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
  • you have hypokalaemia (your potassium level is very low)
  • you have metabolic alkalosis (a condition with too high a level of bicarbonate in the blood)
  • you can not achieve a sufficiently high blood flow through the hemofilter (the filter used in the blood filtration)
  • you have a high risk of bleeding, as drugs are added to prevent blood clotting in the hemofilter.

Warnings and cautions

Talk to your doctor before using Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium.

  • May only be used after mixing the two solutions in the double chamber bag.
  • Under no circumstances may it be used at temperatures below room temperature.
  • The hoses used to administer the reconstituted solution should be inspected every 30 minutes. If a precipitate (solid material) is observed in the tubes, the bag and tubing system must be replaced immediately and the patient closely monitored.
  • Your doctor will check your fluid balance (the amount of water in your body), the levels of potassium , sodium , other salts, certain residues and your blood sugar levels. Your doctor can also give you dietary advice.

Other medicines and Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

The following interactions are possible:

  • Harmful effects of digitalis (a drug used to treat heart disease).
  • Electrolyte replacement, parenteral nutrition ( intravenous nutrition) and other infusion treatments. Their effect on blood serum concentration and fluid status must be considered in this treatment.
  • This treatment can reduce the blood concentration of drugs. Dose adjustment may be necessary.

Possible side effects

Some side effects can be caused by too much or too little fluid. These are:

  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of the ankles and legs
  • dehydration (eg dizziness, muscle cramps, thirst)

What the medicine looks like and contents of the pack

Multibic 2 mmol / l potassium is delivered in a double chamber bag (two chambers containing different solutions). Mixing the two solutions results in the reconstituted solution.

Each bag contains a total of 5000 ml of solution. The reconstituted solution is clear and colorless.

Each bag is equipped with an HF connection, a Luer lock connection, and an injection port and is covered with a protective foil.
