1. What Addex-Potassium Chloride is and what it is used for

Addex-Potassium chloride is a concentrate for the solution given by healthcare professionals as a drip into a blood vessel ( intravenous infusion ). It belongs to a group of medicines called electrolyte solutions that are used for electrolyte deficiency. Addex-Potassium chloride is used for potassium deficiency and ongoing potassium losses, e.g. in the case of liquid drip or when you get nutrition only via a drip. Your body needs the right amount of potassium. Potassium helps your muscles, heart, and other organs to function normally. Potassium also helps to balance the water levels that affect many electrical and chemical processes in the body. Without the right amount of potassium, the heart can start beating irregularly, which can be life-threatening.

Potassium chloride contained in Addex-Potassium Chloride may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.

2. What you need to know before using Addex-Potassium Chloride

  • if you are allergic to potassium chloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • if you have elevated potassium levels in your blood, e.g. in case of renal impairment, shock condition, or dehydration. The care staff checks this.

Warnings and cautions

Talk to your doctor or nurse before using Addex-Potassium Chloride.

Addex-Potassium chloride should be used with caution in case of renal impairment, abnormally low urine output, or dehydration. Addex-Potassium chloride increases the osmolality (number of dissolved molecules ) in the infusion solution and may increase the risk of thrombophlebitis ( inflammation of a superficial blood vessel). The care staff checks this.
