What Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz is and what it is used for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz used to treat\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection\u00a0(\u00a0infection\u00a0with human immunodeficiency virus) in adults, adolescents, and children weighing at least 25 kg.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nAbacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz contains two active substances that are used to treat\u00a0HIV\u00a0infection: abacavir and lamivudine.\u00a0These substances belong to a group of antiretroviral drugs called\u00a0nucleoside\u00a0reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)<\/em>.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nAbacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz does not cure\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection\u00a0completely.\u00a0It reduces the number of\u00a0viruses\u00a0in the body and keeps it at a low level.\u00a0It also increases the number of CD4 cells in the blood.\u00a0CD4 cells are a type of\u00a0white blood cell\u00a0that is important for the body to fight\u00a0infections.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not all patients respond to Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz in the same way.\u00a0Your doctor will check the treatment effect you are getting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abacavir and lamivudine contained in Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information.\u00a0Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What you need to know before you take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\nDo not take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n- if you are\u00a0allergic\u00a0<\/strong>(hypersensitive)<\/em>\u00a0to abacavir (or to other medicines containing abacavir – eg\u00a0Trizivir, Triumeq,\u00a0or\u00a0Ziagen\u00a0), lamivudine, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (see section 6). Be sure to read all the information about\u00a0hypersensitivity reactions\u00a0in section 4.Check with your doctor<\/strong>\u00a0if you think this applies to you.\u00a0Do not take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Take special care with Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Some patients taking abacavir\/lamivudine or other combination therapies for\u00a0HIV are\u00a0at greater risk for serious\u00a0side effects.\u00a0You need to be aware of the extra risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- if you have moderate or severe liver disease<\/li>
- if you have a\u00a0history of liver disease, including\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0B or\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0C (if you have\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0B\u00a0infection<\/strong>, do not stop taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz without consulting your doctor as your\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0may return)<\/li>
- if you are severely\u00a0overweight<\/strong>\u00a0(especially if you are a woman)<\/li>
- if you have any\u00a0kidney disease.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Talk to your doctor before taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz if any of these apply to you.\u00a0<\/strong>You may need extra checks, including blood tests, while you are taking medication.\u00a0See section 4 for more information.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHypersensitivity reaction to abacavir<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nEven patients who do not have the HLA-B * 5701 gene may develop a <\/strong> hypersensitivity reaction<\/strong> (severe allergic reaction ).<\/p>\n\n\n\nBe sure to read all the information about\u00a0hypersensitivity reactions\u00a0in section 4 of this leaflet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nRisk of heart attack<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt cannot be ruled out that abacavir may increase the risk of myocardial infarction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tell your doctor<\/strong>\u00a0if you have heart problems, if you smoke or if you have other diseases that may increase the risk of heart diseases such as high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0or\u00a0diabetes.\u00a0Do not stop taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz unless your doctor advises you to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\nPay attention to important symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nSome patients who use drugs against HIV – infection develop other conditions, which can be serious. You need to know important signs and symptoms to notice while taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Read the information \u201cOther possible side effects of combination therapy for HIV\u201d in section 4 of this leaflet.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nProtect other people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection\u00a0is spread by sexual contact with someone with\u00a0infection\u00a0one or by infected blood (e.g., by sharing needles).\u00a0You can still transmit\u00a0HIV\u00a0infection when you take this medicine, even though the risk of effective\u00a0antiviral\u00a0therapy is\u00a0reduced.\u00a0Discuss with your doctor the necessary steps to avoid infecting others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other medicines and Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines<\/strong>, including\u00a0medicines obtained\u00a0without a prescription, herbal medicines, herbal medicines,<\/strong> or other natural products.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nRemember to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you start taking a new medicine while you are taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These medicines should not be taken with Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n- emtricitabine, to treat\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection<\/strong><\/li>
- other drugs containing lamivudine, for treatment of\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection\u00a0or\u00a0hepatitis B\u00a0infection<\/strong><\/li>
- high\u00a0doses\u00a0of\u00a0trimethoprim\/sulfamethoxazole,\u00a0an\u00a0antibiotic<\/strong><\/li>
- cladribine, which is used to treat\u00a0hairy cell leukemia. Tell your doctor<\/strong>\u00a0if you are being treated with any of these medicines.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Some medicines affect or are affected by Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThese include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- phenytoin<\/strong>, for the treatment of\u00a0epilepsy. Tell your doctor\u00a0if you are taking\u00a0phenytoin.\u00a0Your doctor may need to check you while you are taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/li>
- methadone\u00a0is used as a\u00a0heroin substitute. Abacavir increases the rate at which\u00a0methadone is\u00a0eliminated from the body.\u00a0If you are taking\u00a0methadone, you will be checked for withdrawal symptoms.\u00a0Your methadone dose may need to be changed. Tell your doctor\u00a0if you are taking\u00a0methadone.<\/li>
- medicines (usual liquids) containing\u00a0sorbitol\u00a0and other sugar alcohols\u00a0(such as xylitol, mannitol, lactitol, and maltitol), if taken regularly.\u00a0Tell your doctor or pharmacist\u00a0if you are being treated with any of these medicines.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Pregnancy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nAbacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz is not recommended for use during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/strong>Abacavir\/lamivudine and similar medicines can cause\u00a0side effects\u00a0in the unborn baby.\u00a0If you have taken Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz during your pregnancy, your doctor may ask you to have regular blood tests and other diagnostic tests to check your baby’s development.\u00a0For children with a\u00a0mother\u00a0who has taken NRTIs during pregnancy, the benefit of\u00a0HIV\u00a0protection outweighs the\u00a0risk of\u00a0side effects.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nBreast-feeding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nWomen who are HIV- positive should not breast-feed<\/strong> because HIV – infection can be transmitted to the baby through breast milk. A small amount of the ingredients in Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz may also pass into breast milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you are breast-feeding or considering breastfeeding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talk to your doctor immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nDriving and using machines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz can cause side effects that may affect your ability to drive or use machines.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talk to your doctor<\/strong> about your ability to drive or use machines while taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention.\u00a0One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and\/or\u00a0side effects.\u00a0Descriptions of these effects and\u00a0side effects\u00a0can be found in other sections.\u00a0Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance.\u00a0If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Important information about some of the ingredients of Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz contains the dye para-orange (E110) which may cause allergic reactions in some people.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you<\/strong>.\u00a0If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe recommended\u00a0dose\u00a0of Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz for adults, adolescents, and children weighing at least 25 kilograms is one tablet once a day.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nSwallow the tablets whole with a little water. Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz can be taken with or without food.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep in regular contact with your doctor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nAbacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz helps keep your disease under control.\u00a0You must take it every day to prevent the disease from getting worse.\u00a0You may still develop other\u00a0infections\u00a0you or illnesses associated with\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep in touch with your doctor and do not stop taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz\u00a0without\u00a0your doctor<\/strong>‘s advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you take more Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz than you should<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you forget to take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If you forget to take a\u00a0dose, take it as soon as you remember.\u00a0Then continue with the treatment as before.\u00a0Do not take a double\u00a0dose\u00a0to make up for a forgotten\u00a0dose.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is important that you take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz regularly, as an irregular intake may increase the risk of\u00a0hypersensitivity reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you have stopped taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If you have stopped taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz for any reason – especially when you think you may have had side effects or due to another illness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talk to your doctor before taking the medicine again.\u00a0<\/strong>Your doctor will check if your symptoms were related to a\u00a0hypersensitivity reaction.\u00a0If your doctor thinks there is a connection,\u00a0you will be asked never to take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz or other medicines containing abacavir (eg Trizivir or Ziagen) again<\/strong>.\u00a0It is important that you follow this advice.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf your doctor advises you to start taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz again, you may be asked to take the first dose in a place where you have access to medical care if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Possible side effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
During\u00a0HIV\u00a0treatment, weight gain and increased levels of\u00a0lipids\u00a0and\u00a0glucose\u00a0in the blood may occur.\u00a0This is partly related to restored health and lifestyle, but when it comes to blood lipids, there can sometimes be a connection with\u00a0HIV\u00a0drugs.\u00a0Your doctor will perform tests to find such changes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause\u00a0side effects, although not everybody gets them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the treatment of an\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection, it is not always possible to tell whether a symptom of drug side effects caused by Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz or other medicines you are taking.\u00a0For this reason, it is very important that you talk to your doctor about any changes in your state of health.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nEven patients who do not have the HLA-B * 5701 gene may develop a hypersensitivity reaction <\/strong>(a severe allergic reaction ), described in this leaflet under the heading ‘Hypersensitivity reactions’.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is very important that you read and understand the information about this serious reaction.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs well as the\u00a0side effects\u00a0mentioned below for Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/strong>, other conditions may develop during combination therapy for\u00a0HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is important to read the information later in this section under “Other possible\u00a0side effects\u00a0of combination therapy for HIV”.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHypersensitivity s<\/strong>
Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/strong> contains abacavir (<\/strong> which is also an active substance in Trizivir, Triumeq<\/strong> and Ziagen)<\/strong> . Abacavir can cause a severe allergic reaction , a so-called hypersensitivity reaction . These hypersensitivity reactions have been seen more frequently in people taking abacavir-containing medicines.
Who can get these reactions?<\/strong>Anyone taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz may develop a hypersensitivity reactionto abacavir, which may be life-threatening if they continue to take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.
You are more likely to develop this reaction if you have a gene called HLA-B * 5701<\/strong> (but you can get a reaction even if you do not have this gene). You should have been tested for this gene before you were prescribed Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz. If you know that you carry this gene, talk to your doctor before taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/strong>
About 3-4 out of every 100 patients treated with abacavir in a clinical study who did not carry the HLA-B * 5701 gene developed a hypersensitivity reaction .
What are the symptoms?<\/strong>The most common symptoms are:fever<\/strong> (high temperature) and rash.<\/strong>Other<\/strong> common symptoms are:nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pronounced fatigue.Other symptoms are:Joint or muscle pain, swollen throat, shortness of breath, sore throat, cough, temporary headache, eye inflammation ( conjunctivitis<\/em> ), cold sores, low blood pressure , tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.
When do these symptoms occur?<\/strong>Hypersensitivity reactions may occur at any time during treatment with Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz but more likely during the first six weeks of treatment.
Contact your doctor immediately:<\/strong>1 if you get a rash, OR<\/strong>2 if you get symptoms from at least 2 of the following groups:<\/strong>fevershortness of breath, sore throat or coughnausea or vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal painpronounced fatigue or diffuse pain or general malaise.Your doctor may advise you to stop taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz.<\/strong>
If you have stopped taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz<\/strong>If you have stopped taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz due to a hypersensitivity reaction , you should NEVER take <\/strong> Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz or any other medicine containing abacavir (eg Trizivir, Triumeq or Ziagen) again<\/strong> . If you do, you could get a dangerous drop in blood pressure within a few hours, which could result in death.
If you have stopped taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz for any reason – especially when you think you may have had side effects or due to another illness:
Talk to your doctor before taking the medicine again. <\/strong>Your doctor will check if your symptoms were related to a hypersensitivity reaction . If your doctor thinks there is a connection, you will be asked never to take Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz or other medicines containing abacavir (eg Trizivir, Triumeq or Ziagen) again. <\/strong>It is important that you follow this advice.
Occasionally, hypersensitivity reactions have developed in patients who start taking abacavir again and who had only one of the symptoms listed on the warning card before stopping taking the medicine.
In very rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions have developed in patients who start taking abacavir again but have no symptoms before stopping the medicine.
If your doctor advises you to start taking Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz again, you may be asked to take the first dose in a place where you have access to medical care if needed.
If you are hypersensitive to abacavir \/ lamivudine, return any unused Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz tablets for destruction. <\/strong>Consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Packages with Abacavir \/ Lamivudine Sandoz contains a warning cards<\/strong> to remind you and medical staff about hypersensitivity reaction you . This card contains important safety information. Always carry it with you.<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\nCommon side effects are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThese can occur in up to 1 in 10<\/strong> users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- hypersensitivity reaction<\/li>
- headache<\/li>
- vomiting<\/li>
- nausea<\/li>
- diarrhea<\/li>
- abdominal pain<\/li>
- loss of appetite<\/li>
- fatigue, weakness<\/li>
- fever (high temperature)<\/li>
- the general (general) feeling of illness<\/li>
- difficulty sleeping\u00a0(insomnia)<\/em><\/li>
- muscle pain and discomfort<\/li>
- joint pain<\/li>
- cough<\/li>
- irritated or runny nose<\/li>
- rash<\/li>
- hair loss.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Uncommon side effects are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThese can occur in up to 1 in 100<\/strong> users and they can be detected in blood tests:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- low red blood cell count ( anemia<\/em> ) or low white blood cell count ( neutropenia<\/em> )<\/li>
- increase in liver enzyme levels<\/li>
- reduction in the number of blood cells involved in blood coagulation ( thrombocytopenia<\/em> ).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Rare side effects are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThese can occur in up to 1 in 1000<\/strong> users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- liver diseases, such as jaundice, enlarged liver or\u00a0fatty liver,\u00a0inflammation\u00a0(\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0)<\/em><\/li>
- inflammation\u00a0of the pancreas\u00a0(\u00a0pancreatitis\u00a0)<\/em><\/li>
- degradation of muscle tissue.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Rare side effects that can be detected in blood tests are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n - increase in an enzyme called amylase.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Very rare side effect s<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThese can occur in up to 1 in 10,000<\/strong> users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- numbness and tingling in the skin<\/li>
- a feeling of weakness in arms and legs<\/li>
- skin rash, which can become blisters and look like small targets (dark spot in the middle surrounded by a lighter field and a dark ring along the edge)\u00a0(erythema multiforme)<\/em><\/li>
- scattered skin rash with blisters and flaking skin occurs especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals\u00a0(\u00a0Stevens-Johnson syndrome\u00a0),<\/em>\u00a0and a more severe form that causes skin flaking on more than 30% of the body surface\u00a0(\u00a0toxic epidermal necrolysis\u00a0)<\/em><\/li>
- lactic acidosis (excess\u00a0lactic acid\u00a0in the blood)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
If you notice any of these symptoms, contact a doctor immediately.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nVery rare side effects that can be detected in blood tests are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n - failure of the bone marrow’s ability to form new\u00a0red blood cells\u00a0(\u00a0pure erythrocyte plasma\u00a0).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
If you get side effects ar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nTell your doctor or pharmacist<\/strong> if any of these side effects gets serious or bothersome, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nOther possible side effects are with combination therapy for HIV<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nCombination therapy such as abacavir\/lamivudine may cause other conditions to develop during HIV treatment.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n Symptoms of infection and inflammation<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\nOld infection can flare up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nPatients with advanced\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection\u00a0(\u00a0AIDS\u00a0) have weak immune systems and are more likely to develop a serious\u00a0infection\u00a0(\u00a0opportunistic\u00a0infection\u00a0s\u00a0).\u00a0Such\u00a0infections\u00a0may have been “silent” and not detected by the weak immune system before starting treatment.\u00a0When treatment is started, the immune system becomes stronger and can fight the\u00a0infections, which can cause symptoms of infection or inflammation.\u00a0Symptoms usually\u00a0include fever<\/strong>\u00a0and any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- headache<\/li>
- gripe<\/li>
- breathing difficulties<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
In rare cases, when the immune system becomes stronger, it can also attack healthy body tissue (\u00a0autoimmune diseases<\/em>\u00a0).\u00a0The symptoms of autoimmune diseases may develop several months after you start taking medicines for your\u00a0HIV\u00a0–\u00a0infection.\u00a0Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n- palpitations (rapid or irregular heartbeat) or tremors<\/li>
- hyperactivity (excessive restlessness and excessive movement)<\/li>
- weakness that begins in the hands and feet and moves upwards towards the torso.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
If you get symptoms of an infection <\/strong>and inflammation or if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above:<\/p>\n\n\n\nTalk to your doctor immediately<\/strong>.\u00a0Do not take any other anti-infective\u00a0medication\u00a0without consulting your doctor.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou may have a skeletal problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nSome patients treated with combination therapy for\u00a0HIV\u00a0develop a condition called\u00a0osteonecrosis.\u00a0In this condition, parts of the bone tissue die due to reduced blood supply.\u00a0Patients may be at greater risk of getting this condition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n - if they have been treated with combination therapy for a long time<\/li>
- if they are also taking anti-inflammatory medicines called corticosteroids s<\/li>
- if they drink alcohol<\/li>
- if their immune system is very weak<\/li>
- if they are overweight.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Characteristics of osteonecrosis include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n- stiffness in the joints<\/li>
