is and what it is used for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>VFEND contains the active substance voriconazole.\u00a0VFEND is a medicine against fungal\u00a0infections.\u00a0It works by killing or stopping the growth of the fungi that cause the\u00a0infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VFEND is used to treat patients (adults and children from 2 years of age) with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>invasive&nbsp;aspergillosis&nbsp;(a type of fungal infection caused by&nbsp;<em>Aspergillus sp<\/em>&nbsp;)<\/li><li>candidemia&nbsp;(another type of fungal infection caused by&nbsp;<em>Candida&nbsp;sp<\/em>&nbsp;) in non-&nbsp;neutropenic&nbsp;patients (patients without abnormally low&nbsp;white blood cell counts&nbsp;)<\/li><li>severe invasive&nbsp;<em>Candida&nbsp;sp<\/em>&nbsp;.&nbsp;infection&nbsp;when the fungus is resistant to&nbsp;fluconazole&nbsp;(another antifungal medicine)<\/li><li>severe fungal infections caused potentially life-threatening fungal infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventive treatment in stem cell transplant patients who are at high risk of developing fungal infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This product should only be used under medical supervision.<br><a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to know before you use VFEND<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not use VFEND<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you are allergic to voriconazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very treatment of&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;) at a&nbsp;dose&nbsp;of 400 mg or more once daily<\/li><li>carbamazepine (used to treat seizures)<\/li><li>phenobarbital (used for severe sleep disorders and convulsions)<\/li><li>ergot alkaloids (eg,&nbsp;ergotamine&nbsp;, dihydroergotamine; used for&nbsp;migraine&nbsp;)<\/li><li>sirolimus (used in transplant patients)<\/li><li>ritonavir (used in the by painkillers called&nbsp;opioids&nbsp;(eg morphine, oxycodone,&nbsp;fentanyl&nbsp;, tramadol,&nbsp;codeine&nbsp;))<\/li><li>tolvaptan (used to treat&nbsp;hyponatremia&nbsp;(low levels of&nbsp;sodium&nbsp;in the blood) or to slow the deterioration of kidney function in patients with polycystic kidney disease)<\/li><li>lurasidone (used to treat depression)<\/li><li>venetoclax (used in the treatment of patients with&nbsp;chronic lymphocytic leukemia&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;CLL&nbsp;)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and precautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using VFEND if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>you have previously had an&nbsp;allergic reaction&nbsp;to other azoles<\/li><li>you have or have previously had liver disease.&nbsp;If you have liver disease, your doctor may prescribe a lower&nbsp;dose&nbsp;of VFEND.&nbsp;The doctor must also use blood tests to check your liver function while you are being treated with VFEND<\/li><li>you have a known disease of the heart muscle, irregular heartbeats, slow heartbeats or an&nbsp;ECG&nbsp;change called &#8220;long QTc syndrome&#8221;.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid all sunlight and sun exposure while you are being treated with VFEND.&nbsp;It is important to cover exposed areas of the skin and to use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF), as the skin can become more sensitive to the sun&#8217;s UV rays.&nbsp;These precautions also apply to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you are being treated with VFEND, tell your doctor immediately if you receive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>sun damage<\/li><li>skin rash or blisters<\/li><li>bone pain<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you develop the above skin problems, your doctor may refer you to a dermatologist who, after a consultation, may decide that it is important for you to be examined regularly.&nbsp;There is a small risk of developing skin cancer during long-term use with VFEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you develop signs of &#8216;adrenal insufficiency&#8217;.&nbsp;This means that the adrenal glands do not produce enough of certain steroid hormones such as&nbsp;cortisol&nbsp;, which can lead to symptoms such as&nbsp;chronic&nbsp;or prolonged fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your doctor if you develop signs of Cushing&#8217;s syndrome.&nbsp;This means that the body produces too much of the&nbsp;hormone cortisol&nbsp;,&nbsp;which&nbsp;can lead to symptoms such as weight gain, lumps of fat between the shoulder blades, a round face, darker skin on the stomach, thighs, breasts and arms, thin skin, bruising more easily, high blood sugar, excessive hair growth, excessive sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor checks liver and kidney function by taking certain blood samples.<a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children and young people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>VFEND should not be given to children under 2 years of age.<a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other medicines and VFEND<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, even those without a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some medicines can affect or be affected by the simultaneous use of VFEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you are taking the following medicines as VFEND should not be taken at the same time if it can be avoided:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ritonavir (for the treatment of&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;) in a&nbsp;dose&nbsp;of 100 mg twice daily.<\/li><li>Glasdegib (for cancer treatment) \u2013 if you need to be treated with both medicines, your doctor will do frequent checks on your heart rhythm.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as co-treatment with VFEND should be avoided if possible, and dose adjustment of voriconazole may be necessary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rifabutin (for the treatment of&nbsp;tuberculosis&nbsp;).&nbsp;If you are already being treated with rifabutin, your blood values \u200b\u200band&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;must be monitored .<\/li><li>Phenytoin&nbsp;(for the treatment of&nbsp;epilepsy&nbsp;).&nbsp;If you are already being treated with&nbsp;phenytoin&nbsp;, the concentration of&nbsp;phenytoin&nbsp;in the blood must be monitored during treatment with VFEND and the&nbsp;dose&nbsp;may need to be adjusted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as a dose adjustment or check may be needed to make sure these medicines and\/or VFEND are still having the desired effect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>warfarin&nbsp;and other&nbsp;anticoagulants&nbsp;(eg phenprocoumon, acenocoumarol) (used to&nbsp;inhibit&nbsp;the blood&#8217;s prescribed by a doctor.&nbsp;Effective contraception must be used by women of&nbsp;childbearing&nbsp;age.&nbsp;Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking
