{"id":22304,"date":"2022-06-24T06:08:17","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T06:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/?p=22304"},"modified":"2022-06-24T14:43:47","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T14:43:47","slug":"rivomoxi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/medical\/medicines\/rivomoxi\/","title":{"rendered":"Rivomoxi &#8211; Moxifloxacin uses, dose and side effects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>400 mg&nbsp;film-coated tablets (Adults)<br>moxifloxacin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Rivomoxi is and what it is used for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi contains the active substance moxifloxacin, which belongs to a group of\u00a0antibiotics\u00a0called\u00a0fluoroquinolones.\u00a0Rivomoxi works by killing bacteria that cause you\u00a0infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi is used in patients aged 18 years and older to treat bacterial&nbsp;infections&nbsp;caused by bacteria that moxifloxacin is effective against.&nbsp;Rivomoxic is only used to treat these&nbsp;infections&nbsp;when standard&nbsp;antibiotics&nbsp;can not be used or have not worked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infection\u00a0of the sinuses, sudden worsening of long-term\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the airways, or\u00a0pneumonia\u00a0(\u00a0pneumonia\u00a0) that has been received outside of the hospital (does not apply to severe cases).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mild to moderate&nbsp;infection&nbsp;in the upper parts of the woman&#8217;s abdomen (&nbsp;inflammation&nbsp;of the small pelvis), including&nbsp;infection&nbsp;in the fallopian tubes and&nbsp;infection&nbsp;in the lining of the uterus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not enough to treat these types of\u00a0infections\u00a0with Rivomoxi alone.\u00a0Therefore, your doctor will prescribe an additional\u00a0antibiotic\u00a0in addition to Rivomoxi to treat\u00a0infections\u00a0in the upper parts of the woman&#8217;s abdomen (see section 2. What you need to know before taking Rivomoxi, Warnings, and Precautions, Talk to your doctor before taking Rivomoxi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the following bacterial\u00a0infection\u00a0has improved during initial treatment with moxifloxacin solution for\u00a0infusion, your doctor may prescribe Rivomoxy tablets to complete the treatment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pneumonia\u00a0outside of\u00a0hospital, skin and soft tissue infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi should not be used for the initial treatment of any type of skin or soft tissue infection or severe\u00a0pneumonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to know before you use Rivomoxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before taking this medicine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should not take\u00a0antibacterial\u00a0fluoroquinolone\/quinolone medicines, including Rivomoxi if you have previously had any serious\u00a0side effects\u00a0from taking any\u00a0quinolone\u00a0or fluoroquinolone medicines.\u00a0If this is the case, contact your doctor as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact a physician if you are not sure if you belong to any of the patient groups described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do not take Rivomoxi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you are allergic to the active substance moxifloxacin, any other quinolone antibiotics, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6. Contents of the pack and other information)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you are pregnant or breast-feeding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you are younger than 18 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you have a history of late-onset problems with quinolone antibiotics (see section Warnings and precautions and section&nbsp;4. Possible&nbsp;side&nbsp;effects&nbsp;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you were born with or have<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a condition associated with abnormal heart rhythm (visible on\u00a0ECG, heart examination using electrodes)<\/li><li>imbalance in blood salts (especially low levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0or\u00a0magnesium\u00a0in the blood)<\/li><li>a very slow heart rhythm (called\u00a0bradycardia\u00a0)<\/li><li>a weak heart (\u00a0heart failure\u00a0)<\/li><li>previously had an abnormal heart rhythm<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>or<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you are taking other medicines that may cause abnormal\u00a0ECG\u00a0changes (see section Other medicines and Rivomoxi).\u00a0This is because Rivomoxi can cause\u00a0ECG\u00a0changes that are an extension of the\u00a0QT interval, e.g.\u00a0delayed transmission of electrical signals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; if you have severe liver disease or elevated liver enzymes (&nbsp;transaminases&nbsp;) higher than 5 times the upper limit of normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and cautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Talk to your doctor before taking Rivomoxi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rivomoxi may\u00a0<strong>alter your\u00a0ECG\u00a0(changes in electrocardiography)<\/strong>, especially if you are a woman or older.\u00a0If you are currently taking a medicine that lowers your blood potassium levels, consult your doctor before taking Rivomoxi (see also section Do not take Rivomoxi and Other medicines and Rivomoxi).<\/li><li>if you have been diagnosed with an enlargement or &#8220;bulge&#8221; of a large blood vessel (aortic aneurysm or peripheral\u00a0aneurysm\u00a0in a large blood vessel).<\/li><li>if you have had an aortic dissection (a rupture of the aortic wall).<\/li><li>if you have been diagnosed with leaky heart valves.<\/li><li>if someone in your family has or has had an aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection or congenital heart valve disease, or has other risk factors or conditions that increase the risk of this (eg connective tissue diseases such as Marfan syndrome,\u00a0Ehlers-Danlos syndrome,\u00a0Turner syndrome,\u00a0Sj\u00f6gren&#8217;s syndrome\u00a0(an\u00a0inflammatory\u00a0autoimmune\u00a0disease) or vascular diseases such as Takayasu&#8217;s arteritis, giant cell arteritis, Beh\u00e7et&#8217;s disease, high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0or known atherosclerosis,\u00a0rheumatoid arthritis\u00a0(a joint disease) or\u00a0endocarditis\u00a0(an\u00a0infection\u00a0of the heart)).<\/li><li>If you have\u00a0epilepsy\u00a0or any other condition that can cause\u00a0seizures, consult your doctor before taking Rivomoxi.<\/li><li>If you have or have had\u00a0mental health problems, talk to your doctor before taking Rivomoxi.<\/li><li>If you or someone in your family has\u00a0glucose\u00a0\u20116 \u2011 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency\u00a0(a rare inherited disease), tell your doctor, who will tell you if Rivomoxi is suitable for you.<\/li><li>If you have\u00a0myasthenia gravis\u00a0(abnormal muscle fatigue leading to weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis), Rivomoxi may worsen your symptoms.\u00a0Contact a doctor immediately if you think this applies to you.<\/li><li>If you as a woman have a\u00a0complicated\u00a0infection\u00a0in the upper abdomen\u00a0(eg at the same time as varicose veins in the fallopian tubes and ovaries or the pelvis) for which the doctor considers an\u00a0intravenous\u00a0treatment is necessary, treatment with Rivomoxi is not suitable.<\/li><li>For the treatment of\u00a0mild to moderate\u00a0infection\u00a0in the upper parts of the woman&#8217;s abdomen, the doctor must also prescribe another antibiotic in addition to Rivomoxi.\u00a0If no improvement in symptoms is seen after 3 days of treatment, consult a doctor.<\/li><li>If you are diabetic because there is a risk of you getting altered blood sugar levels of moxifloxacin.<\/li><li>If you have ever developed a severe rash or scaly skin, blisters, and\/or sores in your mouth after taking moxifloxacin.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>During treatment with Rivomoxi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you experience palpitations or irregular heartbeats during treatment, contact a doctor immediately.\u00a0He\/she may want to do an\u00a0ECG\u00a0examination (electrocardiography) to check your heart rhythm.<\/li><li>The risk of heart problems\u00a0may increase if the\u00a0dose\u00a0is increased.\u00a0Therefore, the recommended dosing instructions must be followed.<\/li><li>There is a small risk that you may get a\u00a0severe, sudden\u00a0allergic reaction\u00a0(an anaphylactic reaction\/shock), already at the first\u00a0dose.\u00a0The symptoms are pressure over the chest, that you feel dizzy, feel unwell, feel dizzy, or dizzy when you get up.\u00a0If this happens, stop taking Rivomoxi and seek medical attention immediately.<\/li><li>Rivomoxi can cause\u00a0sudden and severe\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the liver, which can lead to life-threatening liver failure (including fatal cases, see section 4. Possible\u00a0side effects\u00a0).\u00a0Contact a doctor before continuing to take the medicine\u00a0if the following signs occur: sudden malaise and\/or nausea in combination with yellowing of the whites of the eyes, dark urine,\u00a0itchy\u00a0skin, the tendency to bleed, or brain disease caused by the liver (symptoms of hepatic impairment or a sudden and severe\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the liver).<\/li><li>Severe skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome,\u00a0toxic epidermal necrolysis,\u00a0and\u00a0acute\u00a0generalized exanthematous\u00a0pustulosis\u00a0(AGEP) have been reported with moxifloxacin.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stevens-Johnson syndrome and\u00a0toxic epidermal necrolysis\u00a0may first appear as red, target-like spots or round spots, often with blisters in the center, on the torso.\u00a0In addition, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes (red and swollen eyes) may occur.\u00a0These severe skin rashes are often preceded by fever and\/or\u00a0flu-like symptoms.\u00a0The rash can develop into widespread skin peeling and complications that can be life-threatening or have a fatal outcome.<\/li><li>Acute\u00a0generalized exanthematous\u00a0pustulosis\u00a0(AGEP) occurs at the beginning of treatment as a red, widespread, and flaky rash with bumps under the skin and blisters along with fever.\u00a0Most often located in skin folds, on the upper body, and the arms.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you develop a severe skin rash or any of these other skin symptoms, stop taking moxifloxacin and consult a doctor or seek medical attention immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Quinolone antibiotics, including Rivomoxi, can cause\u00a0<strong>seizures<\/strong>.\u00a0If this happens, stop taking Rivomoxi and contact your doctor immediately.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You may experience\u00a0<strong>mental health problems<\/strong>\u00a0the first time you take quinolone antibiotics, including Rivomoxi.\u00a0In very rare cases, depression and mental health problems have led to suicidal thoughts and behaviors such as suicide attempts (see section 4. Possible\u00a0side effects\u00a0).\u00a0If you develop such reactions, stop taking Rivomoxi and tell your doctor immediately.<\/li><li>You may have\u00a0<strong>diarrhea<\/strong>\u00a0during or after taking antibiotics, including Rivomoxi.\u00a0If this becomes severe or long-lasting or if you notice that the stool contains blood or mucus,\u00a0<strong>stop taking Rivomoxi immediately and consult a doctor<\/strong>.\u00a0You should not take any medicine that stops or reduces bowel movement.<\/li><li>If you are elderly and have\u00a0kidney problems, be sure to drink plenty of fluids during treatment with Rivomoxi.\u00a0Dehydration can increase the risk of\u00a0kidney failure.<\/li><li>If your vision is impaired or you experience any other\u00a0eye problems\u00a0during treatment with Rivomoxi, contact an eye specialist immediately (see sections Driving and using machines and section 4. Possible\u00a0side effects\u00a0).<\/li><li>Quinolone antibiotics can make the\u00a0skin more sensitive to sunlight or UV rays.\u00a0You should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or strong sunlight and do not sunbathe in a solarium or use any other UV light lamp during treatment with Rivomoxi.<\/li><li>The efficacy of Rivomoxi in the treatment of severe burns,\u00a0deep\u00a0tissue\u00a0infection,\u00a0or osteomyelitis foot\u00a0infections (\u00a0bone marrow\u00a0infection) in\u00a0diabetics has not been established.<\/li><li>Suppose you feel a sudden, severe pain in the abdomen, chest, or back. In that case, you should immediately go to an emergency room as this may be a symptom of an aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection.\u00a0The risk of developing this may be increased if you are being treated with systemic\u00a0corticosteroids\u00a0(&#8220;cortisone&#8221;).<\/li><li>If you experience sudden shortness of breath, especially when you lie down in bed, notice swelling in your ankles, feet, or stomach, or have a new heartbeat (feeling of rapid or irregular heartbeat), contact a doctor immediately.<\/li><li>Fluoroquinolone\u00a0-type antibiotics may cause your blood sugar level to rise above normal (hyperglycemia),\u00a0or decrease your blood sugar level below normal (hypoglycemia), which may lead to loss of consciousness (hypoglycaemic\u00a0coma\u00a0) in severe cases (see section 4. Possible\u00a0side effects\u00a0) have been reported.\u00a0If you have\u00a0diabetes, your blood sugar should be monitored carefully.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Long-term, disabling, and possibly lasting serious\u00a0side\u00a0effects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antibacterial\u00a0fluoroquinolone\/quinolone drugs, including Rivomoxi, have been linked to very rare but serious\u00a0side effects.\u00a0Some of these have been long-lasting (up to months or years), disabling, and possibly permanent.\u00a0This includes pain in the tendons, muscles, and joints of the arms and legs, difficulty walking, abnormal sensations such as ant crawling, tingling, tingling, numbness or a burning sensation (\u00a0paresthesia\u00a0), sensory disorders in the form of impaired vision, taste, smell and hearing, depression, memory loss, extreme fatigue and difficulty sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get any of these\u00a0side effects\u00a0after taking Rivomoxi, talk to a doctor immediately before continuing treatment.\u00a0You and your doctor will decide if you should continue treatment or consider using another type of\u00a0antibiotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children and young people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not give this medicine to children and adolescents under 18 years of age as efficacy and safety have not been established for this age group (see section Do not take Rivomoxi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other medicines and Rivomoxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Rivomoxi, be aware of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you are taking Rivomoxi and other\u00a0<strong>medicines that may affect your heart<\/strong>, there is an increased risk of heart rhythm changes.\u00a0Therefore, do not take Rivomoxi with the following medicines:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>medicines<\/strong>\u00a0belonging to the\u00a0antiarrhythmic\u00a0group (eg\u00a0quinidine, hydroquinone,\u00a0disopyramide\u00a0,\u00a0amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide)<\/li><li>antipsychotics (eg phenothiazines, pimozide, sertindole,\u00a0haloperidol, sultopride)<\/li><li>tricyclic\u00a0antidepressants<\/li><li>certain antimicrobials (eg sparfloxacin, saquinavir,\u00a0intravenous\u00a0erythromycin, pentamidine, antimalarials, especially halofantrine)<\/li><li>some\u00a0antihistamines\u00a0(eg terfenadine, astemizole, mizolastine)<\/li><li>other medicines (eg cisapride,\u00a0intravenous\u00a0vincamine, bepridil and difemanil).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You must tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can lower your blood potassium levels (eg certain\u00a0diuretics, certain\u00a0laxatives\u00a0and enemas [in high\u00a0doses\u00a0] or\u00a0corticosteroids\u00a0[anti-inflammatory drugs], amphotericin B) or cause slower heartbeat, such as this may increase the risk of serious heart rhythm disturbances while you are taking moxifloxacin.<\/li><li>Drug-containing\u00a0magnesium\u00a0or aluminum\u00a0(such as antacids for indigestion),\u00a0iron, zinc, or\u00a0<strong>didanosine<\/strong>\u00a0or drugs containing\u00a0<strong>sucralfate<\/strong>\u00a0(for the treatment of stomach upset) may reduce the effect of Rivomoxi.\u00a0Therefore, moxifloxacin tablets should be taken 6 hours before or after taking these other medicines.<\/li><li>Taking medicines containing\u00a0<strong>medical carbon<\/strong>\u00a0at the same time as Rivomoxi reduces the effect of Rivomoxi.\u00a0Therefore, it is recommended that these drugs not be taken at the same time.<\/li><li>If you are taking\u00a0<strong>blood-thinning medicines<\/strong>\u00a0at the same time (oral\u00a0anticoagulants\u00a0such as\u00a0warfarin\u00a0), it may be necessary for your doctor to check your coagulation time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rivomoxi with food, drink, and alcohol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi can be taken with or without food (including dairy products).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not take Rivomoxi if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animal studies do not indicate that&nbsp;fertility&nbsp;will be impaired when using this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving and using machines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi may make you feel dizzy and faint, you may experience a sudden, transient loss of vision or you may faint for a short while.&nbsp;If you feel this, do not drive or operate machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention.\u00a0One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and\/or\u00a0side effects.\u00a0Descriptions of these effects and\u00a0side effects\u00a0can be found in other sections.\u00a0Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance.\u00a0If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rivomoxi contains para-orange (E110)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivomoxi contains para-orange (E110) which is a dye that can cause allergic reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use Rivomoxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.&nbsp;Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommended&nbsp;dose&nbsp;for adults is one 400 mg film-coated tablet once daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swallow the tablet whole (so as not to feel the bitter taste) and together with plenty of liquid.&nbsp;You can take Rivomoxi with or without food.&nbsp;Try to take the tablet at about the same time each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same\u00a0dose\u00a0can be taken by elderly patients, patients with low body weight, or by patients with kidney problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duration of treatment with Rivomoxi depends on your\u00a0infection.\u00a0Unless your doctor prescribes otherwise, your treatment will be as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>for the treatment of sudden\u00a0exacerbation\u00a0of\u00a0chronic\u00a0bronchitis: 5-10 days<\/li><li>for the treatment of\u00a0pneumonia\u00a0(\u00a0pneumonia\u00a0) obtained outside the hospital: 10 days<\/li><li>for the treatment of\u00a0acute sinus\u00a0infection\u00a0(\u00a0acute\u00a0bacterial\u00a0sinusitis\u00a0): 7 days<\/li><li>for the treatment of mild to moderate\u00a0infection\u00a0of the upper abdomen (\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the small pelvis), including\u00a0infection\u00a0of the fallopian tubes and\u00a0infection\u00a0of the lining of the uterus: 14 days.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When Rivomoxi is used to end a treatment started with moxifloxacin solution for\u00a0infusion, the recommended treatment times are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pneumonia&nbsp;(&nbsp;pneumonia&nbsp;) received outside hospital: 7\u201314 days.&nbsp;Most patients with&nbsp;pneumonia&nbsp;usually switch to&nbsp;oral&nbsp;treatment with moxifloxacin tablets within 4 days.<\/li><li>Infection&nbsp;of the skin and soft tissues: 7-21 days.&nbsp;Most patients with skin and soft tissue&nbsp;infections&nbsp;switch to&nbsp;oral&nbsp;treatment with Rivomoxi within 6 days.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must complete the entire course, even if you feel better after a few days.\u00a0If you stop taking Rivomoxi prematurely,\u00a0the infection\u00a0may not be adequately treated and\u00a0infection\u00a0may return or your condition may worsen.\u00a0The bacteria that cause\u00a0infection\u00a0can develop\u00a0resistance\u00a0to Rivomoxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommended\u00a0dose\u00a0and duration of treatment should not be exceeded (see section 2. What you need to know before taking Rivomoxi, Warnings, and Precautions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you use more Rivomoxi than you should&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have ingested too much medicine or if e.g.\u00a0If a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have taken more than the prescribed\u00a0dose\u00a0(1 tablet per day),\u00a0<strong>seek medical help immediately<\/strong>.\u00a0If possible, take any remaining tablet or package or package leaflet with your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you forget to use Rivomoxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you forget to take the tablet,\u00a0<strong>take it as soon as you remember on the same day.\u00a0<\/strong>If you do not take a tablet in one day, take your normal\u00a0dose\u00a0(one tablet) the next day.\u00a0Do not take a double\u00a0dose\u00a0to make up for a forgotten\u00a0dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you stop using Rivomoxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you stop taking this medicine too soon, the&nbsp;infection&nbsp;may be inadequately treated.&nbsp;Talk to your doctor if you wish to stop taking the tablets before the end
