Posaconazole uses, dose and side effects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>40 mg \/ ml&nbsp;oral&nbsp;suspension<br>posaconazole<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Posaconazole AHCL is and what it is used for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL contains a drug called posaconazole.&nbsp;It belongs to a group of medicines called &#8220;antifungal medicines&#8221;.&nbsp;It is used to prevent or treat many different fungal infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This medicine works by killing or stopping the growth of certain types of fungi that can cause\u00a0infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL can be used in adults to treat the following types of fungal infections when other antifungal medicines have not worked or you have stopped taking them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>infection\u00a0er, caused by fungi of the family Aspergillus, which have not improved in treatment with the antifungal drugs amphotericin B or itraconazole or when it has been necessary to discontinue treatment with these drugs.<\/li><li>infection\u00a0er, caused by fungi of the family Fusarium, which have not improved during treatment with amphotericin B or when it has been necessary to discontinue treatment with amphotericin B.<\/li><li>infection\u00a0er, caused by fungi causing the conditions\u00a0chromoblastomycosis\u00a0and\u00a0mycetoma, which have not improved with itraconazole treatment or when it has been necessary to discontinue itraconazole treatment.<\/li><li>infection\u00a0er, caused by fungi called Coccidioides, which have not improved with treatment with one or more of the drugs amphotericin B, itraconazole, or\u00a0fluconazole\u00a0or when it has been necessary to discontinue treatment with these drugs.<\/li><li>infection\u00a0in the mouth or throat region (known as &#8220;cod&#8221;) caused by fungi called\u00a0Candida, which have not been treated before.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This medicine can also be used to prevent fungal infections in adults who are at high risk of getting a fungal infection such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>patients who have a weak immune system due to\u00a0chemotherapy\u00a0for &#8220;acute\u00a0myeloid\u00a0leukemia&#8221; (AML) or &#8220;myelodysplastic syndrome&#8221; (MDS)<\/li><li>Patients using a high-dose\u00a0treatment that inhibits the immune system following \u201chematopoietic stem cell transplantation\u201d (\u00a0HSCT\u00a0).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to know before you take Posaconazole AHCL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not take Posaconazole AHCL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you are allergic to posaconazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).<\/li><li>if you are taking: terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, halofantrine,\u00a0quinidine, medicines containing &#8216;ergot alkaloids&#8217; such as\u00a0ergotamine\u00a0or dihydroergotamine, or a &#8216;statin&#8217; such as\u00a0simvastatin, atorvastatin or lovastatin.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not take Posaconazole AHCL if any of the above apply to you.&nbsp;If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Posaconazole AHCL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the section \u201cOther medicines and Posaconazole AHCL\u201d below for more information including information on other medicines that may affect Posaconazole AHCL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and cautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Posaconazole AHCL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you have had an\u00a0allergic reaction\u00a0to any other antifungal medicines such as\u00a0ketoconazole,\u00a0fluconazole, itraconazole, and voriconazole.<\/li><li>if you have or have ever had liver problems.\u00a0You may need to take blood samples while taking this medicine.<\/li><li>if you develop severe diarrhea or vomiting, as these conditions may limit the effect of this medicine.<\/li><li>if you have an abnormal heart rhythm, on examination (\u00a0ECG\u00a0), which indicates a problem called long QTc interval.<\/li><li>if you have a weakness in the heart muscle or\u00a0heart failure.<\/li><li>if you have a very slow heartbeat.<\/li><li>if you have any kind of heart rhythm disorder.<\/li><li>if you have any kind of problem with your blood levels of\u00a0potassium,\u00a0magnesium,\u00a0or\u00a0calcium.<\/li><li>if you are taking vincristine, vinblastine, or other &#8216;vinca alkaloids&#8217; (medicines used to treat cancer).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the above apply to you (or you are not sure) talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking Posaconazole AHCL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you develop severe diarrhea or vomiting (feeling unwell) while taking Posaconazole AHCL, talk to a doctor, pharmacist, or nurse immediately as this may prevent it from working properly.\u00a0See section 4 for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL should not be given to children (17 years and younger).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other medicines and Posaconazole AHCL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do not take Posaconazole AHCL if you are taking any of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>terfenadine (used to treat&nbsp;allergies&nbsp;)<\/li><li>astemizole (used to treat&nbsp;allergies&nbsp;)<\/li><li>cisapride (used to treat stomach upset)<\/li><li>pimozide (used to treat symptoms of&nbsp;Tourette&#8217;s syndrome&nbsp;)<\/li><li>halofantrine (used to treat&nbsp;malaria&nbsp;)<\/li><li>quinidine&nbsp;(used to treat abnormal heart rhythms).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL can increase the amount of these drugs in the blood which can cause very serious disorders of your heart rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>drugs that contain &#8220;ergot alkaloids&#8221; such as\u00a0ergotamine\u00a0or dihydroergotamine which are used to treat\u00a0migraines.\u00a0Posaconazole AHCL can increase the amount of these drugs in the blood which can lead to a sharp decrease in blood flow to your fingers or toes and cause damage.<\/li><li>a &#8220;statin&#8221; such as\u00a0simvastatin, atorvastatin, or lovastatin is used to treat high\u00a0cholesterol.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not take Posaconazole AHCL if any of the above apply to you.&nbsp;If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other drugs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the list above of medicines that must not be used while you are taking Posaconazole AHCL.\u00a0In addition to the drugs mentioned above, other drugs carry a risk of arrhythmias that can be greater when taken with Posaconazole AHCL.\u00a0Tell your doctor about any medicines you take (prescription or over-the-counter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some medicines may increase the risk of&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;of Posaconazole AHCL by increasing the amount of Posaconazole AHCL in the blood.&nbsp;The following medicines may reduce the effect of Posaconazole AHCL by reducing the amount of Posaconazole AHCL in your blood:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>rifabutin and rifampicin (used to treat certain\u00a0infections\u00a0).\u00a0If you are already being treated with rifabutin, your blood counts must be tested and certain probable\u00a0side effects\u00a0of rifabutin monitored.<\/li><li>certain medicines used to treat or prevent epileptic seizures, including\u00a0phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or primidone.<\/li><li>efavirenz and fosamprenavir are used to\u00a0treat\u00a0HIV\u00a0infection.<\/li><li>drugs used to reduce stomach acids such as cimetidine and ranitidine or omeprazole and similar drugs called\u00a0proton pump inhibitors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL may increase the risk of&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;from certain other medicines by increasing the amount of these medicines in the blood.&nbsp;These medicines include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>vincristine, vinblastine, and other &#8220;vinca alkaloids&#8221; (used to treat cancer)<\/li><li>ciclosporin (used during or after transplant surgery)<\/li><li>tacrolimus and sirolimus (used during or after transplant surgery)<\/li><li>rifabutin (used to treat certain\u00a0infections\u00a0)<\/li><li>antiviral medicines\u00a0called\u00a0protease\u00a0inhibitors\u00a0(including lopinavir and atazanavir given with ritonavir)<\/li><li>midazolam, triazolam, alprazolam or other &#8216;benzodiazepines&#8217; (used as sedatives or muscle relaxants)<\/li><li>diltiazem, verapamil, nifedipine, nisoldipine, or other &#8216;calcium channel blockers (used to treat high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0)<\/li><li>digoxin\u00a0(used to treat\u00a0heart failure\u00a0)<\/li><li>glipizide or other sulfonylureas (used to treat high blood sugar)<\/li><li>all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), also called tretinoin (used to treat certain types of blood cancer).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the above apply to you (or you are not sure) talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Posaconazole AHCL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Posaconazole AHCL with food and drink<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve the uptake of posaconazole, it should be taken with or immediately after a meal or a nutritional drink whenever possible (see section 3 \u201cHow to take Posaconazole AHCL\u201d).&nbsp;There is no information on the effect of alcohol on posaconazole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant before using Posaconazole AHCL.&nbsp;Do not take Posaconazole AHCL during pregnancy unless your doctor tells you to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should use effective contraception while taking this medicine if you are a woman and could become pregnant.&nbsp;Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment with Posaconazole AHCL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Posaconazole AHCL, as small amounts may pass into breast milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving and using machines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may feel dizzy, drowsy, or have blurred vision while taking Posaconazole AHCL, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines.\u00a0If this happens, do not drive or use machines and consult your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Posaconazole AHCL contains glucose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Posaconazole AHCL contains approximately 1.75 g\u00a0glucose\u00a0per 5 ml\u00a0suspension.\u00a0You should not take this medicine if you have a condition called\u00a0glucose-galactose malabsorption and you should take this amount of glucose into account if you need to control your sugar intake for any reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This medicine contains less than 1 mmol\u00a0sodium\u00a0(23 mg) per 5 ml\u00a0suspension, ie essentially &#8216;sodium-free&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to take Posaconazole AHCL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not switch between taking posaconazole tablets and posaconazole\u00a0oral\u00a0suspension\u00a0without talking to a doctor or pharmacist, as this may lead to a lack of effect or an increased risk of\u00a0side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.&nbsp;Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.&nbsp;Your doctor will monitor the effect and your condition and determine how long Posaconazole AHCL must be given and if any changes in your daily&nbsp;dose&nbsp;are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The table below shows the recommended&nbsp;dose&nbsp;and duration of treatment, these depend on the type of&nbsp;infection&nbsp;you have and can be individually tailored for you by your doctor.&nbsp;Do not change the&nbsp;dose&nbsp;or treatment schedule yourself until you have consulted your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever possible you should take posaconazole during or immediately after food or a nutritional drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><th scope=\"col\"><strong>Indication<\/strong><\/th><th scope=\"col\"><strong>Recommended dose and duration of treatment<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><tr><td>Treatment of resistant fungal infections\u00a0<em>(\u00a0invasive\u00a0\u00a0aspergillus infection, fusarium infection, chromoblastomycosis infection \/ mycetoma, coccidioidomycosis infection)<\/em><\/td><td>The recommended\u00a0dose\u00a0is 200 mg (a 5 ml spoon) taken four times daily. Alternatively, if your doctor recommends it, you can take 400 mg (two 5 ml spoons) twice daily provided you can take both\u00a0doses\u00a0during or after a meal or a nutritional drink.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>First-time treatment of cod<\/td><td>On the first day of treatment, you should take 200 mg (a 5 ml spoon) once.&nbsp;After the first day, you should take 100 mg (2.5 ml) once a day.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Prevention of serious fungal infections<\/td><td>Take 200 mg (a 5 ml spoon) three times daily.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you take more Posaconazole AHCL than you should<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you may have used too much, contact a doctor or healthcare professional immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you forget to take Posaconazole AHCL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and continue as before.\u00a0However, if it is almost time for your next\u00a0dose, take your\u00a0dose\u00a0when the time comes.\u00a0Do not take a double\u00a0dose\u00a0to make up for a forgotten\u00a0dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible side effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all medicines, this medicine can cause\u00a0side effects, although not everybody gets them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Serious&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Talk to a doctor, pharmacist, or nurse immediately if you experience any of the following serious\u00a0side effects\u00a0&#8211; you may need immediate medical attention:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>nausea or vomiting (feeling or pronounced symptoms), diarrhea<\/li><li>signs of liver problems &#8211; characterized by yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark-colored urine or pale stools, feeling unwell for a reason, stomach problems, decreased appetite or abnormal fatigue or weakness, increase in liver enzymes detected by blood tests<\/li><li>allergic reaction.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse if you experience any of the following side effects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a change in the salt levels in the blood detected by blood tests &#8211;
