chloride<\/li><li>magnesium chloride hexahydrate<\/li><li>sodium acetate trihydrate<\/li><li>sodium gluconate<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Glucose&nbsp;is one of the body&#8217;s energy sources.&nbsp;This&nbsp;infusion solution&nbsp;provides 220 kilocalories per liter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sodium,\u00a0potassium,\u00a0magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate are chemical substances found in the blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose is used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to add liquid and carbohydrates (sugar) e.g.&nbsp;at:<ul><li>burns<\/li><li>head injuries<\/li><li>bone fracture (&nbsp;fracture&nbsp;is)<\/li><li>infection&nbsp;is<\/li><li>peritoneal irritation (&nbsp;inflammation&nbsp;inside the abdominal cavity)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>to deliver fluid during surgery<\/li><li>in metabolic&nbsp;acidosis&nbsp;(when the blood becomes too acidic) which is not life-threatening<\/li><li>lactic acidosis (a type of metabolic&nbsp;acidosis&nbsp;caused heartbeat)<\/li><li>any condition in which the blood becomes too alkaline (metabolic or&nbsp;respiratory&nbsp;alkalosis&nbsp;)<\/li><li>abnormally low levels of&nbsp;calcium&nbsp;in the blood (hypocalcemia)<\/li><li>lack of acid secretion in the stomach (hypochlorhydria)<\/li><li>treatment with potassium-sparing&nbsp;diuretics&nbsp;(diuretic tablets that cause an accumulation of&nbsp;potassium&nbsp;in the body) eg:<ul><li>amiloride<\/li><li>potassium kanrenoate<\/li><li>spironolactone<\/li><li>triamterene<br>(the above medicines may be included in combination medicines)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>inadequately treated&nbsp;diabetes, which means that your blood sugar level can rise above normal<\/li><li>some form of glucose intolerance, eg:<ul><li>metabolic stress (when the body&#8217;s&nbsp;metabolism&nbsp;does not function satisfactorily eg caused by serious illness)<\/li><li>hyperosmolar&nbsp;coma&nbsp;(unconsciousness).&nbsp;This is a type of&nbsp;coma&nbsp;that can occur if you have&nbsp;diabetes&nbsp;and do not receive adequate treatment.<\/li><li>higher blood sugar level than normal (hyperglycemia)<\/li><li>abnormally high levels of lactate in the blood (hyperlactatemia)<\/li><li>if you are allergic to&nbsp;glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, sodium acetate trihydrate or sodium gluconate, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and cautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose is a hyperosmotic (concentrated) solution.&nbsp;The doctor will take this into account when determining the dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following medical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>heart failure<\/li><li>breathing difficulties (lung disease)<\/li><li>renal failure<br>(special monitoring may be required for the above conditions)<\/li><li>high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0(\u00a0hypertension\u00a0)<\/li><li>accumulation of fluid under the skin, especially at the ankles (peripheral\u00a0edema\u00a0)<\/li><li>fluid accumulation in the lungs (\u00a0pulmonary edema\u00a0)<\/li><li>high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0during pregnancy (\u00a0preeclampsia\u00a0or\u00a0eclampsia\u00a0)<\/li><li>aldosteronism (a disease that causes high levels of the\u00a0hormone\u00a0et\u00a0alaldosterone\u00a0)<\/li><li>other conditions associated with sodium retention (when the body retains too much\u00a0sodium\u00a0), such as treatment with\u00a0steroids\u00a0(see also below &#8220;Other medicines and Plasmalyte Glucose&#8221;)<\/li><li>diabetes\u00a0(your blood sugar levels will be closely monitored and your insulin treatment may need to be adjusted)<\/li><li>any condition that causes you to probably have high levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in your blood (\u00a0hyperkalemia\u00a0), eg:<ul><li>kidney failure<\/li><li>adrenal insufficiency (an adrenal disease that affects the\u00a0hormones\u00a0that regulate the body&#8217;s content of various chemical substances).<\/li><li>acute\u00a0dehydration (loss of fluid from the body eg due to vomiting or diarrhea)<\/li><li>extensive tissue damage (which occurs, for example, in severe burns)<br>(in these cases, close monitoring of potassium levels in the blood is required)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>myasthenia gravis\u00a0(a disease that causes gradually increasing muscle weakness)<\/li><li>recovery after\u00a0surgery<\/li><li>head injury within the last 24 hours<\/li><li>high pressure in the skull (\u00a0intracranial\u00a0hypertension\u00a0)<\/li><li>a\u00a0stroke\u00a0due to a blockage in a blood vessel in the brain (ischemic\u00a0stroke\u00a0)<\/li><li>if you have problems with the fluid level in your brain (for example due to\u00a0meningitis, bleeding in the skull, or brain damage)<\/li><li>if you have a disease that can cause high levels of\u00a0vasopressin, a\u00a0hormone\u00a0that regulates fluid levels in the body, such as:<ul><li>an\u00a0acute\u00a0and serious illness or injury<\/li><li>you have had surgery<\/li><li>the disease of the brain<\/li><li>you are taking certain medicines. This can increase the risk of low sodium levels in the blood and can lead to headaches, nausea, seizures, fatigue,\u00a0coma,\u00a0and swelling of the brain.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor will take blood and urine samples when the\u00a0infusion\u00a0is given to monitoring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the amount of fluid in the body<\/li><li>the amount of salt e.g.&nbsp;sodium&nbsp;and&nbsp;potassium&nbsp;in blood and urine (&nbsp;plasma&nbsp;and urine electrolytes)<\/li><li>the amount of sugar in the blood<\/li><li>acid-base balance&nbsp;one in the body (acidity in the blood and urine).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Plasmalyte Glucose contains\u00a0potassium\u00a0, it is not sufficient to treat severe potassium loss (very low plasma levels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose should not be given through the same needle as a\u00a0blood transfusion.\u00a0It can damage the red\u00a0blood cells\u00a0or cause them to clot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose contains substances that can cause\u00a0metabolic alkalosis\u00a0(that the blood becomes too alkaline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Plasmalyte Glucose contains sugar (\u00a0glucose\u00a0), it may cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).\u00a0If this happens, your doctor may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>adjust the infusion rate<\/li><li>give you&nbsp;insulin&nbsp;to lower your blood sugar<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially important if you are diabetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With repeated treatment, your doctor will also give you other&nbsp;infusions&nbsp;to cover your body&#8217;s need for other substances and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a blood sample is taken to detect the presence of a fungus called\u00a0<em>Aspergillus<\/em>, the test can detect\u00a0<em>Aspergillus<\/em>\u00a0even though you are not infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose should be given special care to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newborns, especially those born prematurely and with low birth weight, have an increased risk of getting low or high levels of blood sugar (hypo- or\u00a0hyperglycemia), which can lead to complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other medicines and Plasmalyte Glucose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor or nurse if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following medicines\u00a0<strong>should not<\/strong>\u00a0be used while you are receiving an\u00a0infusion\u00a0of Plasmalyte Glucose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>potassium-sparing&nbsp;diuretics&nbsp;(certain diuretics, eg amiloride,&nbsp;spironolactone&nbsp;, triamterene, potassium canrenoate)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(These medicines can be included in combination medicines. See also &#8220;Plasmalyte Glucose should NOT be given if you have any of the following conditions&#8221; at the beginning of this section).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of the following medicines\u00a0<strong>is not recommended<\/strong>\u00a0while you are receiving an\u00a0infusion\u00a0of Plasmalyte Glucose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ACE inhibitor&nbsp;(used to treat high&nbsp;blood pressure&nbsp;)<\/li><li>angiotensin&nbsp;II receptor antagonists (used to treat high&nbsp;blood pressure&nbsp;)<\/li><li>tacrolimus (used to prevent&nbsp;transplant rejection&nbsp;and to treat certain skin conditions)<\/li><li>ciclosporin (used to prevent&nbsp;transplant rejection&nbsp;)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These drugs can increase the concentration of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in the blood which can be life-threatening.\u00a0There is a greater risk of an increase in blood potassium levels if you have kidney disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some medicines may increase the risk of&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;due to low sodium levels in the blood.&nbsp;These medicines may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>certain cancer drugs<\/li><li>selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (used to treat depression)<\/li><li>antipsychotics<\/li><li>opioid\u00a0er<\/li><li>medicines for pain and\/or\u00a0inflammation\u00a0(also called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (\u00a0NSAIDs\u00a0))<\/li><li>certain medicines for\u00a0epilepsy<\/li><li>oxytocin\u00a0(a medicine used in women during pregnancy and during or after childbirth)<\/li><li>diuretics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other medicines that can affect or be affected by Plasmalyte Glucose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>corticosteroids\u00a0(anti-inflammatory drugs)<\/li><li>carbenoxolone (an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat\u00a0stomach ulcers\u00a0)<\/li><li>muscle relaxants (eg tubocurarine, suxamethonone and vecuron).\u00a0They are used in\u00a0surgery\u00a0under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.<\/li><li>acetylcholine<\/li><li>aminoglycoside\u00a0is (a type of\u00a0antibiotic\u00a0)<\/li><li>nifedipine (used to treat high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0and chest pain)<\/li><li>acidic drugs, including:<ul><li>salicylates used in the treatment of\u00a0inflammation\u00a0(\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/medical\/medicines\/tiplo-citrus\/\">acetylsalicylic acid<\/a>\u00a0)<\/li><li>sleeping pills nurse for advice before taking this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose can be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.\u00a0Your doctor will monitor the electrolyte levels and the amount of fluid in your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if another medicine is added to Plasmalyte Glucose you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>consult your doctor.\u00a0Co-administration\u00a0of a drug called\u00a0oxytocin\u00a0during childbirth may cause decreased sodium levels in the blood (increased risk of\u00a0hyponatremia\u00a0).<\/li><li>read the Glucose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose is given to you by a doctor or nurse.\u00a0Your doctor will decide how much you need and when it should be given to you.\u00a0It depends on your age, weight, your general condition, and the purpose of the treatment.\u00a0The amount you are given may also be affected by other concomitant treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plasmalyte Glucose must NOT be given to you if there are particles in the solution or if the packaging is damaged in any way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmalyte Glucose is usually given through a plastic tube with a needle into a vein.\u00a0However, your doctor may use another method to give you the medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any remaining solution must be discarded.\u00a0An\u00a0infusion\u00a0of Plasmalyte Glucose should NOT be
