{"id":20933,"date":"2022-04-18T18:19:51","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T18:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/?p=20933"},"modified":"2022-04-22T16:40:50","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T16:40:50","slug":"plasmalyte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/medical\/medicines\/plasmalyte\/","title":{"rendered":"Plasmalyte uses, dose and side effects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>infusion&nbsp;solution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Plasmalyte is and what it is used for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma surface is an&nbsp;aqueous solution&nbsp;of the following substances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>sodium chloride<\/li><li>potassium chloride<\/li><li>magnesium chloride hexahydrate<\/li><li>sodium acetate trihydrate<\/li><li>sodium gluconate<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Sodium,\u00a0potassium,\u00a0magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate are chemical substances found in the blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma surface is used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to supply liquid e.g.\u00a0at:<ul><li>burns<\/li><li>head injuries<\/li><li>bone fracture (\u00a0fracture\u00a0is)<\/li><li>infection\u00a0is<\/li><li>peritoneal irritation (\u00a0inflammation\u00a0inside the abdominal cavity)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>to deliver fluid during surgery<\/li><li>in case of\u00a0shock\u00a0caused by blood loss and any condition requiring rapid\u00a0blood transfusion\u00a0and\/or fluid<\/li><li>in metabolic\u00a0acidosis\u00a0(when the blood becomes too acidic) which is not life-threatening<\/li><li>lactic acidosis (a type of metabolic\u00a0acidosis\u00a0caused by the accumulation of\u00a0lactic acid\u00a0in the body).\u00a0Lactic acid\u00a0is mainly formed by the muscles and is removed by the liver.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma surface can be used<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>in adults, the elderly, and adolescents<\/li><li>in infants and toddlers from 28 days to 23 months and children from 2 to 11 years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to know before using Plasmalyte<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DO NOT use Plasmalyte if you have any of the following conditions:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>abnormally high levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in the blood (hyperkalemia)<\/li><li>kidney failure<\/li><li>heart block (very slow heartbeat)<\/li><li>a condition in which the blood becomes too alkaline (metabolic or\u00a0respiratory\u00a0alkalosis\u00a0)<\/li><li>lack of acid secretion in the stomach (hypochlorhydria)<\/li><li>if you are allergic to active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and cautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your doctor or nurse before taking Plasmalyte if you have or have had any of the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>heart failure<\/li><li>breathing difficulties (lung disease)<\/li><li>renal failure<br>(special monitoring may be required for the above conditions)<\/li><li>high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0(\u00a0hypertension\u00a0)<\/li><li>accumulation of fluid under the skin, especially at the ankles (peripheral\u00a0edema\u00a0)<\/li><li>fluid accumulation in the lungs (\u00a0pulmonary edema\u00a0)<\/li><li>high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0during pregnancy (\u00a0preeclampsia\u00a0or\u00a0eclampsia\u00a0)<\/li><li>aldosteronism (a disease that causes high levels of the\u00a0hormone\u00a0et\u00a0alaldosterone\u00a0)<\/li><li>other conditions associated with sodium retention (when the body retains too much\u00a0sodium\u00a0), such as treatment with\u00a0steroids\u00a0(see also below &#8220;Other medicines and Plasmalyte&#8221;)<\/li><li>if you have a disease or condition that causes high levels of\u00a0vasopressin, a\u00a0hormone\u00a0that regulates the body&#8217;s fluid balance.\u00a0You may have too much\u00a0vasopressin\u00a0in your body, e.g.\u00a0if:<ul><li>you had an\u00a0acute\u00a0and serious illness<\/li><li>you are suffering from pain<\/li><li>you have had surgery<\/li><li>you have an\u00a0infection, burn, or brain disease<\/li><li>you have a disease that is linked to the heart, liver, kidneys, or\u00a0central nervous system<\/li><li>you are taking certain medicines (see also below \u201cOther medicines and Plasmalyte\u201d). This can increase the risk of low sodium levels in the blood and can cause headaches, nausea, seizures, listlessness,\u00a0coma, swelling of the brain, and death.\u00a0Swelling of the brain increases the risk of death and brain damage.\u00a0The following people are at higher risk of developing swelling of the brain:<\/li><li>children<\/li><li>women (especially of\u00a0childbearing potential\u00a0)<\/li><li>people who have problems with fluid balance in the brain, e.g.\u00a0due to\u00a0meningitis, skull bleeding, or brain damage.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>abnormally high levels of chloride in the blood (\u00a0hyperchloremia\u00a0)<\/li><li>abnormally high levels of\u00a0sodium\u00a0in the blood (\u00a0hypernatremia\u00a0)<\/li><li>abnormally low levels of\u00a0calcium\u00a0in the blood (hypocalcemia)<\/li><li>any condition that causes you to probably have high levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in your blood (\u00a0hyperkalemia\u00a0), eg:<ul><li>kidney failure<\/li><li>adrenal insufficiency (an adrenal disease that affects the\u00a0hormones\u00a0that regulate the body&#8217;s content of various chemical substances).<\/li><li>acute\u00a0dehydration (loss of fluid from the body eg due to vomiting or diarrhea)<\/li><li>extensive tissue damage (which occurs, for example, in severe burns)<br>(in these cases, close monitoring of potassium levels in the blood is required)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>myasthenia gravis\u00a0(a disease that causes gradually increasing muscle weakness)<\/li><li>recovery after\u00a0surgery.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor will take blood and urine samples when the\u00a0infusion\u00a0is given to monitoring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the amount of fluid in the body<\/li><li>the amount of salt e.g.&nbsp;sodium&nbsp;and&nbsp;potassium&nbsp;in blood and urine (&nbsp;plasma&nbsp;and urine electrolytes)<\/li><li>acid-base balance&nbsp;one in the body (acidity in the blood and urine)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Plasmalyte contains\u00a0potassium, it is not sufficient to treat severe potassium loss (very low plasma levels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plasma surface contains substances that can cause\u00a0metabolic alkalosis\u00a0(that the blood becomes too alkaline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With repeated treatment, your doctor will also give you other&nbsp;infusions&nbsp;to cover your body&#8217;s need for other substances and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a blood sample is taken to detect the presence of a fungus called\u00a0<em>Aspergillus<\/em>, the test can detect\u00a0<em>Aspergillus<\/em>\u00a0even though you are not infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other medicines and Plasmalyte<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of the following medicines&nbsp;<strong>is not recommended<\/strong>&nbsp;while you are receiving an&nbsp;infusion&nbsp;of Plasmalyte:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>potassium-sparing\u00a0diuretics\u00a0(certain diuretics, eg amiloride,\u00a0spironolactone, triamterene, potassium canrenoate).ACE inhibitor\u00a0(used to treat high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0)<\/li><li>angiotensin\u00a0II\u00a0antagonist\u00a0(used to treat high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0)<\/li><li>tacrolimus (used to prevent\u00a0transplant rejection\u00a0and to treat certain skin conditions)<\/li><li>ciclosporin (used to prevent\u00a0transplant rejection\u00a0)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These drugs can increase the concentration of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in the blood which can be life-threatening.\u00a0There is a greater risk of an increase in blood potassium levels if you have kidney disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some medicines affect the&nbsp;hormone&nbsp;et&nbsp;vasopressin&nbsp;and may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>diabetes medication (chloropropamide)<\/li><li>cholesterol drugs (clofibrate)<\/li><li>certain cancer drugs (vincristine, ifosfamide, cyclophosphamide)<\/li><li>selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (used to treat depression)<\/li><li>antipsychotics<\/li><li>opioids\u00a0(used to treat severe pain)<\/li><li>drugs that relieve pain and\/or\u00a0inflammation\u00a0(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (\u00a0NSAIDs\u00a0))<\/li><li>drugs similar to or enhancing the effect of\u00a0vasopressin\u00a0such as desmopressin (used to treat increased thirst and urination), terlipressin (used to treat esophageal bleeding), and\u00a0oxytocin\u00a0(used to initiate labor)<\/li><li>antiepileptics\u00a0(carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine)<\/li><li>diuretics\u00a0(diuretics).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other medicines that can affect or be affected by Plasmalyte:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>corticosteroids\u00a0(anti-inflammatory drugs)<\/li><li>carbenoxolone (an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat\u00a0stomach ulcers\u00a0)<\/li><li>muscle relaxants (eg tubocurarine, suxamethonone and vecuron).\u00a0They are used in\u00a0surgery\u00a0under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.<\/li><li>acetylcholine<\/li><li>aminoglycoside\u00a0is (a type of\u00a0antibiotic\u00a0)<\/li><li>nifedipine (used to treat high\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0and chest pain)<\/li><li>acidic drugs, including<ul><li>salicylates used in the treatment of\u00a0inflammation\u00a0(\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/medical\/medicines\/tiplo-citrus\/\">acetylsalicylic acid<\/a>\u00a0)<\/li><li>sleeping pills (\u00a0barbiturates\u00a0)<\/li><li>lithium (for the treatment of mental illness)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>basic medicines, drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma surface can be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.&nbsp;Your doctor will monitor the electrolyte levels and the amount of fluid in your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if another drug is added to Plasmalyte, you should<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>consult your doctor<\/li><li>read the package leaflet for the added medicine<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving and using machines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Consult a doctor or pharmacist before driving or using machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention.\u00a0One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and\/or\u00a0side effects.\u00a0Descriptions of these effects and\u00a0side effects\u00a0can be found in other sections.\u00a0Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance.\u00a0If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use Plasmalyte<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A playmate is given to you by a doctor or nurse.\u00a0Your doctor will decide how much you need and when it should be given to you.\u00a0It depends on your age, weight, your general condition, and the purpose of the treatment.\u00a0The amount you are given may also be affected by other concomitant treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plasma surface must NOT be given to you if there are particles in the solution or if the packaging is damaged in any way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma surface is usually given through a plastic tube with a needle into a vein.\u00a0Usually,y a vein in the arm is used to give the\u00a0infusion.\u00a0However, your doctor may use another method to give you the medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before and during\u00a0infusion, your doctor should check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the amount of fluid in the body<\/li><li>the acidity of the blood and urine<\/li><li>the number of electrolytes\u00a0in the body (especially sodium in patients with high levels of vasopressin, or in patients using drugs that enhance the effect of\u00a0vasopressin\u00a0).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Any remaining solution must be discarded.&nbsp;An&nbsp;infusion&nbsp;of Plasmalyte should NOT be given to you from a bag that is partially used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you take more Plasmalyte than you should<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get too much Plasmalyte (over-infusion), or if given too fast, the following symptoms may occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excess fluid and\/or sodium with the accumulation of fluid in\u00a0tissue\u00a0an reflexes<\/li><li>decreased breathing (\u00a0respiratory depression\u00a0)<\/li><li>nausea<\/li><li>vomiting<\/li><li>reddening of the skin<\/li><li>thirst<\/li><li>low\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0(\u00a0hypotension\u00a0)<\/li><li>somnolence<\/li><li>slow heart rate (\u00a0bradycardia\u00a0)<\/li><li>coma\u00a0(unconsciousness)<\/li><li>acidification of the blood (\u00a0acidosis\u00a0) which leads to fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and increased breathing.<\/li><li>hypokalaemia\u00a0(abnormally low levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0in the blood) and\u00a0metabolic alkalosis\u00a0(when the blood becomes too alkaline) especially in patients with\u00a0renal failure<\/li><li>mood swings<\/li><li>fatigue<\/li><li>breathing difficulties<\/li><li>muscle stiffness<\/li><li>muscle twitching<\/li><li>muscle contractions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of these\u00a0side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor immediately.\u00a0Infusion\u00a0one will be discontinued and you will receive treatment depending on the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a drug is added to Plasmalyte and an reaction&nbsp;(&nbsp;hypersensitivity reaction&nbsp;):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>swelling of the skin of the face, lips, and throat<\/li><li>breathing difficulties<\/li><li>rash<\/li><li>redness (\u00a0erythema\u00a0)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment will be given depending on the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other\u00a0side effects\u00a0ar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>reactions caused by the method of administration<ul><li>fever<\/li><li>infection\u00a0at the infusion site<\/li><li>burning sensation<\/li><li>local pain or reaction (\u00a0redness\u00a0or swelling) at the infusion site<\/li><li>irritation and\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the vein in which\u00a0infusion\u00a0is given of\u00a0sodium\u00a0in the blood can be caused by the treatment given in a hospital hospital-acquired\u00a0hyponatremia\u00a0) and a related neurological condition (\u00a0acute\u00a0hyponatremic\u00a0encephalopathy\u00a0).\u00a0Hyponatremia\u00a0can lead to permanent brain damage and death due to swelling of the brain (cerebral\u00a0edema\u00a0) (see also children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No special temperature instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the bag after EXP.&nbsp;The expiration date is the last
