Omeprazole Evolan contains the drug substance omeprazole. It belongs to a group of medicines called “proton pump inhibitors”. These work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Omeprazole Evolan is used to treat the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adults:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Gastroesophageal reflux\u00a0disease (\u00a0GERD\u00a0).\u00a0This is when acid from the stomach leaks into the esophagus (the connection between the mouth and the stomach) and causes pain,\u00a0inflammation,\u00a0and heartburn\/heartburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Ulcers in the\u00a0duodenum\u00a0(\u00a0duodenal ulcer\u00a0) or the stomach ( gastric\u00a0ulcer\u00a0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Wounds that are infected by a bacterium called “Helicobacter pylori”. If you have such wounds, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and to allow wound healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A gastric\u00a0ulcer\u00a0is caused by so-called\u00a0NSAIDs\u00a0(Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).\u00a0Omeprazole Evolan can also be used to prevent\u00a0stomach ulcers\u00a0when you are taking\u00a0NSAIDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Too much acid in the stomach is caused by a\u00a0tumor\u00a0in the pancreas (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Children over 1 year and \u2265 10 kg<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Gastroesophageal reflux\u00a0disease (\u00a0GERD\u00a0).\u00a0This is when acid from the stomach leaks into the esophagus (the connection between the mouth and the stomach) and causes pain,\u00a0inflammation,\u00a0and heartburn\/heartburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In children, symptoms may include vomiting of stomach contents into the mouth, vomiting, and decreased weight gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children and adolescents over 4 years<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Wounds that are infected by a bacterium called “Helicobacter pylori”. If you have such wounds, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and to allow wound healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Omeprazole contained in Omeprazole Evolan may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this leaflet.\u00a0Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professionals if you have any further questions and always follow their<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 if you are allergic to medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors (eg pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 if you are taking medicines containing nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not take Omeprazole Evolan if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Omeprazole Evolan may mask the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following occur before you start taking Omeprazole Evolan or while you are taking them, contact your doctor immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You lose a lot of weight for no reason and have trouble swallowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You get stomach pains or indigestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You start vomiting food or blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You get black (blood-mixed) stools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You get severe or persistent diarrhea, as omeprazole is associated with a certain increase in\u00a0infectious\u00a0diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You have severe liver problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with medicine like Omeprazole Evolan that reduces stomach acid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If you are going to have a specific blood test (chromogranin A).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you are taking Omeprazole Evolan for a long time (over a year), your doctor will probably check you regularly. You should discuss any new or unusual symptoms and circumstances with your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Using\u00a0proton pump inhibitors\u00a0such as Omeprazole Evolan, and especially if you use Omeprazole Evolan for more than a year, may increase the risk of a hip, wrist, or vertebral fracture (bone fracture).\u00a0Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis\u00a0or\u00a0if you are taking medicines called\u00a0corticosteroids\u00a0as they may increase the risk of osteoporosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you get a rash, especially in areas exposed to the sun, tell your doctor as soon as possible as you may need to stop taking Omeprazole Evolan.\u00a0Also remember to mention any other\u00a0side effects, such as joint pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Some children with chronic illnesses may need long-term treatment, although it is not recommended. Do not give this medicine to children under one year of age or under 10 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.\u00a0This is because Omeprazole Evolan can affect the way other medicines work and other medicines can affect the effect of Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not take Omeprazole Evolan if you are also taking medicines containing nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Ketoconazole , itraconazole, posaconazole or voriconazole (used to treat fungal infections).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Digoxin ( used to treat heart problems)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Diazepam\u00a0(\u00a0used to treat anxiety, muscle relaxation, or epilepsy\u00a0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Phenytoin\u00a0(used in\u00a0epilepsy\u00a0).\u00a0If you are taking\u00a0phenytoin, your doctor will need to monitor you when you start or stop taking Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Drugs used for blood thinning, such as warfarin or other vitamin K blockers. Your doctor may need to monitor you when you start or stop taking Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection )<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Tacrolimus (for organ transplantation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n St.\u00a0John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) (used to treat mild depression)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cilostazol (used to treat “peephole”)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Sakvinavir (used to treat HIV infection )<\/p>\n\n\n\n Clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots ( thrombosis )<\/p>\n\n\n\n Erlotinib (used to treat cancer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Methotrexate (a chemotherapeutic drug used in high doses to treat cancer) – If you are taking high doses of methotrexate, your doctor may temporarily discontinue your treatment with Omeprazole Evolan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your doctor has prescribed\u00a0antibiotics, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin, in combination with Omeprazole Evolan to treat\u00a0stomach ulcers\u00a0caused by\u00a0Helicobacter pylori\u00a0infection,\u00a0you must tell your doctor if you are also taking other medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n See section 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.\u00a0Your doctor will decide if you can take Omeprazole Evolan during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Omeprazole passes into breast milk, but it is unlikely that the baby will be affected at the recommended\u00a0dose.\u00a0Your doctor will decide if you can take Omeprazole Evolan if you are breastfeeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Omeprazole Evolan is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or handle tools or machines. Side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances may occur (see section 4). If you are affected by these symptoms, you should not drive or operate machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are responsible for assessing whether you are fit to drive a motor vehicle or perform work that requires sharpened attention.\u00a0One of the factors that can affect your ability in these respects is the use of drugs due to their effects and\/or\u00a0side effects.\u00a0Descriptions of these effects and\u00a0side effects\u00a0can be found in other sections.\u00a0Read all the information in this leaflet for guidance.\u00a0If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This medicine contains sucrose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Always take Omeprazole Evolan exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your doctor will tell you how many capsules to take and how long to take them. Dosage one depends on your condition and how old you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recommended dose is listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adults:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux<\/strong> caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD ):<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If your doctor has found that your esophagus is slightly damaged, the usual dose is 20 mg once a day for 4-8 weeks. Your doctor may recommend that you take a dose of 40 mg for another 8 weeks if the damage to your esophagus is not healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 The usual dose after the esophagus has healed is 10 mg once a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If your esophagus is not damaged, the usual dose is 10 mg once a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of duodenal<\/strong> ulcers<\/strong> ( duodenal ulcers )<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recommended dose is 20 mg once daily for 2 weeks. Your doctor may recommend that you take the same dose for another 2 weeks if the wound has not healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If the wound has not healed completely, the dose can be increased to 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of ulcers in the stomach<\/strong> ( gastric ulcer ):<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 The recommended dose is 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks. Your doctor may recommend that you take the same dose for another 4 weeks if the wound has not healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If the wound has not healed completely, the dose can be increased to 40 mg once daily for 8 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To prevent recurrence of duodenal and gastric<\/strong> ulcers :<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recommended dose is 10 or 20 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase the dose to 40 mg once a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs <\/strong>(Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs):<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recommended dose is 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To prevent duodenal and gastric ulcers<\/strong> if you are taking NSAIDs<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 The recommended dose is 20 mg once daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of wounds caused by Helicobacter pylori<\/strong> infection and to prevent recurrence of wounds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The usual dose is 20 mg Omeprazole Evolan twice daily for 1 week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Your doctor will also recommend that you take two\u00a0antibiotics\u00a0of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of excess acid in the stomach caused by a tumor of the pancreas (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recommended dose is 60 mg daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Your doctor will adjust the dose according to your needs and will also decide how long you should take the medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of GERD symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Children over 1 year of age and with a bodyweight of more than 10 kg can be treated with Omeprazole Evolan.\u00a0Dosage\u00a0one is based on the weight of the child and the correct\u00a0dose\u00a0one is decided by the doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the treatment of wounds caused by Helicobacter pylori<\/strong> infection and to prevent recurrence of wounds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Children over 4 years of age can be treated with Omeprazole Evolan. Dosage one is based on the weight of the child and the correct dose one is decided by the doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Your doctor will also prescribe two\u00a0antibiotics\u00a0for your child, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taking the medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You should take the capsules in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 You can take the capsules with food or on an \u201cempty stomach\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Swallow your capsules whole with half a glass of water.\u00a0Do not chew or crush the capsules.\u00a0This is because the capsules contain coated granules that prevent the medicine from being broken down by the acid in the stomach.\u00a0The granules mustn’t be damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What you can do if you or your child have difficulty swallowing the capsules<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If you or your child has difficulty swallowing the capsules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Open the capsule and swallow the contents directly with half a glass of water or mix the contents with a small amount of yogurt, some sour fruit juice (eg apple juice, orange juice, or pineapple juice), or apple puree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Always stir mixture one before drinking it ( mixture one will not be ready). Then drink the mixture immediately or within 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – To make sure that you have ingested all the medicine, rinse the glass well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid particles contain the medicine – they must not be chewed or crushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you have ingested too much medicine or if e.g.\u00a0If a child has ingested the medicine by mistake, contact a doctor or hospital for risk assessment and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you forget to take a\u00a0dose, take it as soon as you notice it.\u00a0If it is near the time of the next\u00a0dose\u00a0– skip the missed\u00a0dose.\u00a0Do not take a double\u00a0dose\u00a0to make up for a forgotten\u00a0dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not stop taking Omeprazole Evolan without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Like all medicines, this medicine can cause\u00a0side effects, although not everybody gets them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stop taking Omeprazole Evolan and contact your doctor immediately, if you notice any of the following unusual but serious side effects:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Sudden wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting, or difficulty swallowing (severe\u00a0allergic reaction\u00a0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Reddening\u00a0of the skin with blistering or flaking.\u00a0Severe blistering and bleeding on the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals may also occur.\u00a0This can be “Stevens-Johnson syndrome” or “toxic\u00a0epidermal\u00a0necrolysis”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yellowed skin, dark urine, and fatigue, which may be symptoms of liver problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other side effects include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Common side effects (<\/strong> may affect up to 1 in 10 people)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Headache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Effects on the stomach or intestines: diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence (flatulence).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Nausea or vomiting <\/p>\n\n\n\n Benign polyps in the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Uncommon side effects (<\/strong> may affect up to 1 in 100 people)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Swelling in the feet and ankles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Sleep disorders (insomnia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Dizziness, tingling, drowsiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Vertigo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Changes in the blood picture that show the function of the liver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Rash, hives, and\u00a0itching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 General malaise and lack of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Wrist, hip, or vertebral fractures (bone fractures).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rare side effects (<\/strong> may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Altered blood count such as reduced number of\u00a0white blood cells\u00a0or\u00a0platelets.\u00a0This may cause weakness, bruising, or susceptibility to infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Allergic reactions, sometimes very severe, such as swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, fever, wheezing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Low levels of\u00a0sodium\u00a0in the blood.\u00a0This can cause weakness, vomiting, and cramps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Feeling of agitation, confusion, or depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Taste changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Vision problems, such as blurred vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath ( bronchospasm ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022\u00a0Dry mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Inflammation of the oral cavity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 A fungal infection called \u201ccod\u201d can affect the gut and be caused by a fungus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Liver problems include jaundice, which can cause yellowing of the skin, dark urine, and fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Hair loss ( alopecia ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Skin rash when sunbathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Joint pain ( arthralgia ) or muscle pain ( myalgia ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Increased sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Very rare side effects (<\/strong> may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Changes in blood count including agranulocytosis (lack of white blood cells ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that do not exist).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Severe liver problems leading to liver failure and encephalitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Sudden onset of severe rash, blistering or flaky skin.\u00a0This may be associated with high fever and joint pain (Erythema multiforme,\u00a0Stevens-Johnson syndrome,\u00a0toxic epidermal necrolysis\u00a0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Muscle weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Enlargement of the mammary glands in men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Has been reported (occurs in an unknown number of users)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Inflammation of the intestine (which causes diarrhea)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 If you use Omeprazole Evolan for more than three months, your blood magnesium levels may drop.\u00a0Low levels of\u00a0magnesium\u00a0can manifest as fatigue, involuntary muscle movements, confusion, cramps, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.\u00a0If you get any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.\u00a0Low levels of\u00a0magnesium\u00a0can also lead to decreased levels of\u00a0potassium\u00a0or\u00a0calcium\u00a0in the blood.\u00a0Your doctor may measure the level of magnesium in your blood using regular blood tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Rash, possibly with joint pain<\/p>\n\n\n\n Omeprazole Evolan can in very rare cases affect the white\u00a0blood cells\u00a0so that the immune system is weakened.\u00a0If you get an\u00a0infection\u00a0with symptoms such as fever and severe general malaise or fever with symptoms of local\u00a0infection\u00a0such as pain in the neck, throat, or mouth or difficulty urinating, you must contact a doctor as soon as possible so that any lack of\u00a0white blood cells\u00a0(\u00a0agranulocytosis\u00a0) can be excluded by a blood test.\u00a0It is important that you then have information about your medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Keep this medicine out of the reach and sight of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton, jar, label, or blister after EXP.\u00a0The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.\u00a0HDPE can: 10 \/ 40mg: Use within 100 days after opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 HDPE 20mg can: Use within 105 days of opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Store below 25 \u00b0 C<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Store the blister in the original packaging or close the jar tightly. Moisture sensitive. Press the lid firmly into place after use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask the pharmacy staff how to dispose of medicines. These measures will help to protect the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – The active substance is omeprazole. Each capsule contains 10 mg, 20 mg or 40 mg of omeprazole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – The other ingredients are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Capsule\u00a0content:<\/em>\u00a0spherical sugar granules (consisting of maize starch), sodium lauryl sulfate, anhydrous disodium phosphate, mannitol, hypromellose 6 cP, macrogol 6000, talc, polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide (E 171), and methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate 1 copolymer (1: 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Capsule shell:<\/em> Gelatin. The 10 and 20 mg capsules also contain the dyes quinoline yellow (E104) and titanium dioxide (E171).
