You must read the symptoms of blood clots &#8211; see section 2, &#8220;Blood clots&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leaflet describes several situations when you should stop using Mercilon 28, or when the protection against pregnancy may be reduced.\u00a0In such situations, you should not have intercourse or you should protect yourself with a contraceptive that does not contain\u00a0hormones, such as condoms or any other so-called\u00a0barrier method.\u00a0Do not use safe periods or temperature methods.\u00a0They may be unsafe because Mercilon 28 affects the normal changes in temperature and mucus in the vagina that occur during the menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep in mind that Mercilon 28, like other\u00a0birth control pills, does\u00a0not protect against\u00a0HIV\u00a0infection\u00a0(\u00a0AIDS\u00a0) or any other sexually transmitted disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When using\u00a0birth control pills, your doctor\/midwife will call you for regular check-ups, usually once a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do not use Mercilon 28<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not use Mercilon 28 if you have any of the conditions listed below.\u00a0If you have any of these conditions, you must tell your doctor\/midwife.\u00a0Your doctor\/midwife will discuss which other type of contraception may be more appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you have (or have had) a blood clot in a blood vessel in your legs (deep&nbsp;vein thrombosis&nbsp;, DVT), in your lungs (&nbsp;pulmonary embolism&nbsp;, PE) or any other organ.<\/li><li>if you know you have a disease that affects blood coagulation &#8211; eg&nbsp;protein&nbsp;C deficiency,&nbsp;protein&nbsp;S deficiency, antithrombin III deficiency, Factor V Leiden or antiphospholipid antibodies.<\/li><li>if you need to have an operation or if you stay in bed for a long period of time (see section &#8220;Blood clots&#8221;).<\/li><li>if you have (or have had) a heart attack or a&nbsp;stroke&nbsp;.<\/li><li>if you have (or have had) angina (a condition that causes severe chest pain and may be a first sign of a heart attack) or&nbsp;transient&nbsp;ischemic attack (&nbsp;TIA&nbsp;&#8211; transient stroke symptoms).<\/li><li>if you have any of the following conditions that may increase the risk of a blood clot in your arteries:<ul><li>severe&nbsp;diabetes&nbsp;with damaged blood vessels<\/li><li>very high&nbsp;blood pressure<\/li><li>a very high level of fat in the blood (&nbsp;cholesterol&nbsp;and&nbsp;triglycerides&nbsp;)<\/li><li>a condition called hyperhomocysteinemia.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you have or have had a type of&nbsp;migraine&nbsp;called &#8220;migraine with aura&#8221;.<\/li><li>if you have or have had&nbsp;pancreatitis&nbsp;(&nbsp;inflammation&nbsp;of the pancreas) combined with high levels of blood fats.<\/li><li>if you have or have had severe liver disease and your liver is not yet functioning normally.<\/li><li>if you have or have had cancer that is affected by sex hormones (in the breast or abdomen).<\/li><li>if you have or have had a&nbsp;tumor&nbsp;in your liver.<\/li><li>if you have genital bleeding for no known reason.<\/li><li>if you have&nbsp;hyperplasia&nbsp;of the endometrium (abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus).<\/li><li>if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol or to any of the other ingredients of Mercilon 28.<\/li><li>if you have&nbsp;hepatitis&nbsp;C and are taking medicines containing ombitasvir \/ paritaprevir \/ ritonavir and dasabuvir or glekaprevir \/ pibrentasvir (see section \u201cOther medicines and Mercilon 28\u201d).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If you have any of the conditions described above or should be affected by any of these conditions for the first time when using Mercilon 28, discontinue treatment and contact your doctor\/midwife.\u00a0In the meantime, use a contraceptive that does not contain\u00a0hormones, such as a condom.\u00a0Also, read the section &#8220;General information&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and cautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>When should you contact a doctor?<br><strong>Seek medical attention immediately<\/strong><br>if you notice possible signs of a blood clot that may mean you have a blood clot in your leg (ie deep\u00a0vein thrombosis\u00a0), a blood clot in your lung (ie\u00a0pulmonary embolism\u00a0), a heart attack, or\u00a0stroke\u00a0(see section &#8220;Blood clots&#8221; below). 28<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use combined\u00a0contraceptive pills\u00a0when you have any of the following diseases or conditions, you may need extra controls.\u00a0Your doctor\/midwife can explain this to you.\u00a0Therefore, tell your doctor\/midwife before starting Mercilon 28 if any of the following apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tell your doctor\/midwife if any of the following or difficulty swallowing or rash along with difficulty breathing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blood clots<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using combined hormonal contraceptives such as Mercilon 28 increases the risk of blood clots compared to not using these drugs.&nbsp;In rare cases, a blood clot can block the blood vessels and cause serious problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blood clots can form<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 in veins (called venous\u00a0thrombosis, venous\u00a0thromboembolism\u00a0or VTE)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 in\u00a0arteries\u00a0(called\u00a0arterial\u00a0thrombosis,\u00a0arterial\u00a0thromboembolism,\u00a0or ATE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not always possible to fully recover from blood clots.&nbsp;In rare cases, they can have serious lasting effects and, in very rare cases, be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is important to remember that the overall risk of a dangerous blood clot due to Mercilon 28 is small.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to recognize a blood clot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seek medical attention immediately<\/strong>\u00a0if you notice any of the following signs or symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th scope=\"col\">Do you experience any of these signs?<\/th><th scope=\"col\">What can you possibly suffer from?<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>swelling of a leg or along a vein in the leg or foot, especially if you also get: pain or tenderness in the leg that is only felt when you stand or walk increased heat in the affected leg color change of the skin on the leg eg pale, red or blue.<\/td><td>Deep&nbsp;vein thrombosis<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>sudden unexplained shortness of breath or rapid breathing sudden cough for no apparent reason that could cause you to cough up blood severe chest pain that may increase with deep breathing severe instability or dizziness fast or irregular heartbeat severe pain in the abdomen.<br>If you are unsure, consult a doctor as some of these symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath can be mistakenly interpreted as a milder condition such as a associated with an increased risk of blood clots in the vein (venous&nbsp;thrombosis&nbsp;).&nbsp;However, these&nbsp;side effects&nbsp;are rare.&nbsp;They usually occur during the first year of using a combined hormonal contraceptive.<\/li><li>If a blood clot forms in a vein in the leg or foot, it can lead to deep&nbsp;vein thrombosis&nbsp;(DVT).<\/li><li>If a blood clot moves from the bone and stays in the lung, it can lead to a&nbsp;pulmonary embolism&nbsp;.<\/li><li>In very rare cases, a blood clot can form in a vein in another organ, such as the eye (&nbsp;retinal&nbsp;venous thrombosis&nbsp;).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When is the risk of developing a blood clot in a vein greatest?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of developing a blood clot in a vein is greatest during the first year that you use combined hormonal contraceptives for the first time.&nbsp;The risk can also be higher if you start again with a combined hormonal contraceptive (same product or another product) after a break of 4 weeks or longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first year, the risk decreases, but it is always slightly higher than if you do not use a combined hormonal clot?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk depends on your natural risk of VTE and the type of combined hormonal contraceptive you are taking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total risk of a blood clot in the leg or lungs with Mercilon 28 is small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Of 10,000 women who do not use a combined hormonal contraceptive and are not pregnant, about 2 develop a blood clot in one year.<\/li><li>Of 10,000 women who use a combined hormonal contraceptive that contains levonorgestrel, norethisterone, or norgestimate, about 5-7 develop a blood clot in a year.<\/li><li>Of 10,000 women who use a combined hormonal contraceptive that contains desogestrel such as Mercilon 28, about 9-12 develop a blood clot in a year.<\/li><li>The risk of blood clots varies depending on your small but some conditions increase the risk.&nbsp;The risk is higher:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>if you are very overweight (body mass index or&nbsp;BMI&nbsp;over 30 kg \/ m&nbsp;<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;)<\/li><li>if someone in your family has had a blood clot in their bones, lungs or other organ at a young age (eg for about 50 years).&nbsp;In this case, you may have a hereditary blood clotting disease.<\/li><li>if you need to undergo surgery or stay in bed for a long period of time due to injury or illness, or if your leg is plastered.&nbsp;The use of Mercilon 28 may need to be stopped for several weeks before an operation or while you are less mobile.&nbsp;If you have to stop using Mercilon 28, ask your doctor when you can start using it again.<\/li><li>with increasing age (especially if you are over about 35 years old)<\/li><li>if you gave birth a few weeks ago.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The more conditions you have, the greater the risk of developing a serious problems.\u00a0It can, for example, cause a heart attack or\u00a0stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Factors that may increase the risk of a blood clot in an&nbsp;artery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to know that the risk of a heart attack or&nbsp;stroke&nbsp;due to the use of Mercilon 28 is very small but may increase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>with increasing age (after about 35 years of age)<\/li><li><strong>if you smoke.&nbsp;<\/strong>When using combined hormonal contraceptives such as Mercilon 28, you should stop smoking.&nbsp;If you can not stop smoking conditions or if any of them are particularly serious, the risk of developing a blood clot can be even greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the above conditions change while you are using Mercilon 28, such as if you start smoking, a close relative suffers from a blood clot for an unknown reason, or if you gain a lot of weight, talk to your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Birth control pills&nbsp;and cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breast cancer has been detected somewhat more often in women who use\u00a0birth control pills\u00a0than in women of the corresponding age who do not use\u00a0birth control pills.\u00a0If you stop\u00a0taking birth control pills, the increased risk gradually disappears over 10 years.\u00a0It is not known if this difference is due to the contraceptive pill.\u00a0It may be that the women go for more check-ups so that the breast cancer is detected earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases, benign liver tumors, and in even more rare cases, malignant liver tumors, have been reported among women using\u00a0birth control pills.\u00a0These\u00a0tumors\u00a0can cause internal bleeding.\u00a0Contact a doctor immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cervical cancer is caused by an&nbsp;infection&nbsp;with human&nbsp;papillomavirus (&nbsp;HPV&nbsp;).&nbsp;Cervical cancer has been reported more frequently in women who use combined&nbsp;oral contraceptives&nbsp;for a long time.&nbsp;It is not certain that the contraceptive pill itself is the cause, but it may also be due to sexual habits or other factors (eg cell sampling).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental disorders<\/strong><br>Some women who use hormonal contraceptives, including Mercilon 28, have reported depression or depression.&nbsp;Depression can be severe They may tell you if you need to use supplemental protection (for example a condom) and if so, for how long or if the use of any other medicine you need needs to be changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not use Mercilon 28 if you have&nbsp;hepatitis&nbsp;C and are taking medicines containing ombitasvir \/ paritaprevir \/ ritonavir and dasabuvir or glekaprevir \/ pibrentasvir<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as it may cause elevated liver function values \u200b\u200b(elevation of the liver enzyme&nbsp;ALT&nbsp;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor will prescribe another type of contraceptive before starting treatment with these drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercilon 28 can be used again approximately 2 weeks after the end of this treatment (see section \u201cDo not use Mercilon 28\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some medicines<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>may have an effect on the blood levels of Mercilon 28<\/li><li>may make it&nbsp;<strong>less effective in preventing pregnancy<\/strong><\/li><li>may cause unexpected bleeding.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>This applies to medicines for the treatment of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>epilepsy&nbsp;(eg primidone,&nbsp;phenytoin&nbsp;, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, <a href=\"https:\/\/zeepedia.com\/medical\/medicines\/topiramate-1a-pharma\/\">topiramate<\/a>, felbamate)<\/li><li>tuberculosis&nbsp;(eg rifampicin, rifabutin)<\/li><li>HIV&nbsp;infection&nbsp;(eg ritonavir, nelfinavir&nbsp;, nevirapine, efavirenz)<\/li><li>hepatitis&nbsp;C virus infection (eg boceprivir, telarevir)<\/li><li>other infectious diseases (eg griseofulvin)<\/li><li>high&nbsp;blood pressure&nbsp;in the blood vessels of the lungs (&nbsp;bosentan&nbsp;)<\/li><li>depression ((traditional) herbal medicines containing&nbsp;St. John&#8217;s wort&nbsp;).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If you are taking other medicines or (traditional) herbal medicines that could reduce the effect of Mercilon 28, you should also use a\u00a0barrier method.\u00a0Some medicines may affect the effect of Mercilon 28 up to 28 days after stopping treatment.\u00a0It is, therefore, necessary to use\u00a0barrier\u00a0method one during this time.<br><br>Mercilon 28 may affect the effectiveness of other medicines, e.g.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>medicines containing ciclosporin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; injuries if you have taken several tablets of Mercilon 28 at the same time.\u00a0If you take several tablets at the same time, you may feel sick, vomit, and have bleeding from the abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you forget to take Mercilon 28<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If&nbsp;<strong>less than 12 hours<\/strong>&nbsp;have passed since you should have taken your tablet, you are still protected against pregnancy.&nbsp;Take the tablet as soon as you remember and take the next tablet at the usual time.<\/li><li>If it has been&nbsp;<strong>more than 12 hours<\/strong>&nbsp;since you should have taken your tablet, the protection against pregnancy may be reduced.&nbsp;The more tablets in a row that you have forgotten, the greater the risk that the contraceptive effect has decreased.&nbsp;The risk of getting pregnant is especially high if you forget tablets at the beginning of the tablet chart or if you forget any skip the small white hormone-free tablets and start on the next map immediately.&nbsp;You will probably not have a proper dropout bleeding until the end of the second tablet chart, and you may experience irregular bleeding (splashing and breakthrough bleeding) during the days you are taking active tablets.<br><em>Or:<\/em><\/li><li>You can stop taking the white active tablets and instead take the small white hormone-free tablets for a maximum of 6 days, (the total number of placebo tablets including the forgotten tablet must never be more than seven).&nbsp;Then start on a new tablet the&nbsp;hormones&nbsp;in the tablets well enough and the pregnancy protection will be reduced.&nbsp;In such situations, you should use extra protection (non-hormonal, eg condoms) for seven days.&nbsp;If you vomit within 3-4 hours after taking the tablet, follow the same advice as if you had forgotten a tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you want to change the start date<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take your tablets according to the instructions, you will get your period on about the same day every four weeks.\u00a0If you want to change this, you can shorten (never prolong) the next period with hormone-free tablets.\u00a0For example, if you usually get your period on a Friday and instead want it on a Tuesday (three days earlier), you should start on the next tablet chart three days earlier than usual.\u00a0If you take a few hormone-free tablets (three days or less), you may not get your period that time.\u00a0You may also experience irregular period<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have taken all your tablets at the right time, and you have not vomited, had severe diarrhea, or used other medicines at the same time, it is unlikely that you are pregnant.\u00a0Continue to take Mercilon 28 as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not get your period twice in a row, you may be pregnant.\u00a0Contact your doctor\/midwife immediately.\u00a0Do not or persistent, or if your health changes and you think it may be due to Mercilon 28, talk to your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An increased risk of blood clots in the veins
