What Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard is and what it is used for
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard is a remedy for certain diseases of the heart and circulation and belongs to a group of medicines called beta-receptor blockers. Metoprolol reduces the effects of stress hormones on the heart during physical and mental exertion. This causes the heart to beat more slowly ( heart rate decreases) in these situations.
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard is used for:
- treatment of high blood pressure
- treatment of palpitations
Metoprolol contained in Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard may also be approved for the treatment of other conditions not mentioned in this product information. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professionals if you have any further questions, and always follow their instructions.
What you need to know before you take Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard
Do not take Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard
- if you are allergic to metoprolol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6) or other similar medicines (beta-blocker blocking medicines)
- if you suffer from shock due to severe heart disease
- if you have a sick sinus node in your heart
- if you have severe heart block
- if you have untreated heart failure
- if you have very low blood pressure and / or very low heart rate
- if you have very poor blood circulation in your legs and arms.
Warnings and cautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard if you have any of the following conditions:
- asthma
- pronounced discomfort of narrow airways
- severe acute medical conditions with high levels of acidic substances in the body
- a form of angina called spasmangina (Prinzmetals angina)
- severely impaired renal function
- peephole disease . The condition may worsen when blood pressure drops after medication with Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard .
If you are going to have an operation, tell your doctor that you are taking metoprolol.
Other medicines and Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Some medicines may affect or be affected by treatment with Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard, for example:
- propafenone , amiodarone , quinidine , verapamil, diltiazem , clonidine , disopyramide and hydralazine , digitalis / digoxin (medicines for cardiovascular disease)
- barbituric acid derivatives (medicines for epilepsy)
- anti- inflammatory drugs (eg indomethacin and celecoxib)
- adrenaline (medicine for acute shock and severe allergic reaction)
- phenylpropanolamine (medicine for nasal congestion)
- diphenhydramine (medicine for allergic conditions)
- terbinafine (medicine used to treat fungal infections of the skin)
- rifampicin (medicine for turberculosis)
- other beta- blockers (for example, eye drops)
- MAO inhibitors (antidepressants and Parkinson’s disease)
- inhalation anesthetics (medicines under anesthesia)
- medicines for diabetes in tablet form (oral antidiabetics)
- cimetidine (medicine for heartburn and acid reflux)
- antidepressants ( paroxetine , fluoxetine and sertraline)
- certain medicines for multiple sclerosis (for example fingolimod)
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard with food and drink
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard should preferably be taken in the morning. You should take the tablets in the same way, with or without food, each time.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
There is a risk that the fetus is affected. Therefore always consult a doctor before using Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard during pregnancy.
Breast-feeding
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard passes into breast milk but is unlikely to affect breastfed infants. However, consult a physician before using Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard during breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
Dizziness and tiredness may occur during treatment with Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard. Do not drive or use machines if you experience any of these symptoms.

How to take Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Dose one is determined by the doctor, who adjusts it individually for you.
The recommended dose for adults:
High blood pressure: 50-100 mg once daily. If 100 mg does not give the desired effect, the dose can either be combined with other antihypertensive agents or increased.
Palpitations : 100 mg once daily. If necessary, the dose can be increased.
Use for children
Experience in treating children with Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard is limited.
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard prolonged-release tablets are a special type of tablet that slowly releases the active substance. Therefore, you only need to take Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard once a day, preferably in the morning and in the same way as a meal.
Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard should be swallowed with at least half a glass of liquid. Do not chew or crush.
The prolonged-release tablets of 100 mg and 200 mg should be swallowed whole.
The prolonged-release tablets of 50 mg can be divided into two equal doses.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur during treatment with Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard:
Very common (may affect more than 1 user in 10):
- Fatigue.
Common ( may affect up to 1 in 10 people ):
- Headache, dizziness.
- Cold hands and feet.
- Low heart rate , palpitations.
- Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation.
- Shortness of breath on exertion.
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) :
- Chest pain, fluid retention, weight gain.
- Sleep disorders, nightmares, depression.
- Tingling in the skin, hypersensitivity reaction from the skin in the form of redness or rash.
- Exacerbated tracheal problems.
- Transient worsening of heart failure . During a heart attack, blood pressure can drop sharply.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) :
- Taste changes.
- Visual disturbances, dry and irritated eyes.
- Tinnitus.
- Transient impairment of sexual function.
- Memory disorders, confusion, nervousness, anxiety, hallucinations.
- Psoriasis can worsen, hypersensitivity to sunlight, increased sweating, hair loss.
- Decreased platelet count ( thrombocytopenia ).
- Slow heartbeat, heart rhythm disorders.
- Liver effects.
Has been reported (occurs in an unknown number of users):
- Decreased ability to concentrate.
- Muscle cramps, joint pain.
- Eye inflammation.
- Tissue death (gangrene) in patients with severe circulatory disorders.
- Allergic rhinitis.
- Hepatitis . _
- Dry mouth .
A dry mouth can increase the risk of cavities in the teeth, therefore regular and thorough tooth brushing and dental care are important.
How to store Metoprolol 1A Farma Retard
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label and carton after EXP. The expiration date is the last day of the specified month.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.

What the medicine looks like and contents of the pack
Prolonged-release tablets one of 50 mg are white or almost white, oblong tablets with a notch on both sides and printed with MTT 50 on one side.
Prolonged-release tablets of 100 mg are white or almost white, oblong tablets printed with MTT 100 on one side.
The prolonged-release tablet one of 200 mg is white or almost white, oblong tablets printed with MTT 200 on one side.
